September 5, 2020 - Opened a bottle yesterday for International Cabernet Day and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Decanted for about an hour and it was ready to go. Very smooth, with everything in the right place. This will certainly hold for several more years, but is drinking really well at present.

9/5/20, 6:06 PM - Did you find this Cab to be more on the feminine side? Softer notes & cocoa flavors?

I don't usually get up to Calistoga on my trips, but I did score a regular Black Cat - '15. Hope it can go the distance.

Great pick, btw, for Cab day - next up: Grenache in three weeks...but you knew that, I bet.

This wine is definitely more elegant and graceful, rather than bold and boisterous...which is consistent with all of the previous EMH cabs I’ve had. I do like to hold them for at least 6-7 years, before opening. And, as Merrill will tell you, decanting is recommended. Somewhere between 1-2 hours usually does allow the wine to open up and show better.

By the way, I don’t get cocoa on these wines. Usually, I get dark red fruits, a touch of minerality, and a lively acidity. Aging them helps the acidity integrate well; sometimes it feel a bit prominent when they’re younger.

    Hope that’s helpful.
