November 22, 2020 - Big vanilla bomb. Not necessarily a typical Rioja. Rich, fruity, tannins have faded by now.

I was surprised to read that the wine did not come across as a typical Rioja since to many, La Rioja Alta is quintessential traditional-style Rioja, with slightly lower alcohol levels, long maturation in American oak, a late release after years of bottle age, an emphasis on red fruit and oak spice in the early days, and nearly endless aging potential.
I am cellaring a case and a couple of magnums and hope to enjoy them over the next 20 to 30 years (if I live that long, fingers crossed...). I am hence curious what struck you as atypical? I guess I need to dig up the case and try another bottle...
