November 26, 2020 - After dinner wine for the Knurd family Thanksgiving meal, wanted something to go with the richness of the southern pies being served (pecan, sweet potato, pumpkin, etc). Deep raisined fruit notes- red grape and dried black cherries with some prune and toast-roast-raw chocolate hints in the background; enough red fruit to keep it on the red side of purple in conjunction with the blue/black fruit constituents. Structure definitely driven by the alcohol and tannin (in that order), and I enjoyed how it added some dried cherry, cordial, and kir to the otherwise fruit-free sweet, starchy, buttery, nutty (and extremely delicious) desserts that were served. The body of the wine was well matched to the richness of the pies, with my only complaint a slightly astringent, medicinal finish. Compared to my 2016 note, thinking that the "butter and cream" fat from the desserts wasn't quite the match for the alcohol and tannin as was the pork ribs back in 2016, but overall pleased with the dessert pairing. Finished off the bottle as our digestif. I like the Accordini Amarone better, more balance IMO (usually a little less alcohol) plus its less expensive, but if you can find Zenato under $50 there is value to be had. Overall evaluation: B+ (88).
