Community Tasting Note

December 25, 2020 - I had high hopes, but was disappointed (I seem to be in the minority reading other reviews and this might just be a bad bottle). I did just buy from a wine retailer, so I don't know how this was stored. Poured using Corvain and let it sit in the glass for 90 minutes before having with Christmas dinner (prime rib). Nice typical Geyserville aromas and flavors, but these were a bit muted and the wine was too acidic for me. I would take the other Geyservilles I have had this year (2007, 2013, even 2018) over this. Planning to open the bottle at some point and to give it a good decant, so will update this if my impression changes.

Addendum (12/29/20): I opened this along with a 2015 Lytton Springs. Ian S and srh were spot on - this Geyserville bottle was off. The LS had so much more fruit and fullness on the mid palate. Probably some cork taint. I'll try to track down another bottle of this.

12/26/20, 4:07 PM - So SORRY this one didn't meet your expectations. 🙁 Though you may already be "up" on it, https://www.cellartracker.com/showwikirevision.asp?iWine=2591573&JoinType=Wine&iIndex=2591573&searchId=A1BFDF62 has info on this vintage, including acclaim.

12/26/20, 4:32 PM - Thanks. I had seen most of those and was pretty excited for this one. Maybe just a bottle that wasn’t stored properly.

    12/26/20, 4:51 PM - I'd purchased 2, #1 being corked, so I've my fingers (*&* toes) crossed for #2 😕 , the relatives never having tried a "classic" Geyserville.

12/29/20, 2:49 PM - Absolutely do what you did and write the TN based on what was in the bottle you drank. Other people liking it doesn't mean you do :¬)

However, the two comments of 'bit muted' and 'too acidic' can be indicators of low level cork taint, below direct perception (and this does vary between us), but when you taste an untainted bottle next to it, the difference can be striking.

When you say muted, would 'somewhat stripped of fruit' fit just as well? It's a common indicator statement for low level taint.

Difficult to be certain, even with the glass in front of us. It's usually experience with that very wine that prompts someone to say "this isn't right"

12/29/20, 9:27 PM - Ian S and srh, thank you for your comments. You're completely right. I opened a 2015 Lytton Springs and that made it clear that this Geyserville was off. I didn't get any cork taint aromas after pulling the cork, but I think that's what it was as there's no other explanation for why the fruit wasn't there compared to the Lytton or the other Geyervilles I have had. Thank you both for sharing your knowledge!

12/30/20, 1:13 PM - Rhwinetracker, as Ian S. (who did the HEAVY lifting 😉 ) said, thank YOU for your notes here! 🙂 A few mins ago I did a search for "flawed" in the TNs for this vintage, & there were only 3 among 200+ TNs, though you & I *did* have 2/3. 😕
