Community Tasting Note

  • HowellMountainCru Likes this wine: 92 points

March 12, 2021 - Brought this to a tasting of fellow CTs Jim and Mark based on the enticing note written by MSUwine. I also have been looking for something a little different in Napa Cabs and enjoy Erin and Massimo's take on the varietal and the cooler Coombsville and Carneros grapes they use.

The wine was given air for about 3 hours and consumed over the next 2. It was noticeably lighter and had more herbal notes than the other wines which were highlighted by an excellent 2014 Schrader RBS. I thought the wine still too young at this point but pleasantly different than other primary monolithic 2018s I had so far this year. And the wine did gain a little weight and interest as the night went on but it never really approached a what I hoped it would be. The consensus of the group was a low 90s score. 92 sounds about right to me. HMC

3/13/21, 11:34 AM - I liked the unique flavor profile and I bet it gains3 points easy as it begins to age a bit. Very nice for a different kind of Napa cab, IMO. Thanks for bringing it.

3/14/21, 5:32 AM - I would give it a 91. I thought the wine was smooth and best at the start of the evening and then after an hour exhibited for the first time vege qualities. I would hope over time in the bottle that the turn would go away and as the wine thickens up it would exhibit some sweetness. Perhaps it could rise in two years to a 93, up 2 points and even out.

MSUwine had the bottle in February and your bottle might have been drinking due to a variation in bottling or that the 2018’s can change month to month. It also might be just too young and MSUwine has more experience with how early drinking bottles turn out down the line.

Thanks for sharing the wine as I have never had this one. What a fun evening and it was great to see you and Mark again.
