May 1, 2021 - Napa - Lokoya - Vice Versa - Memento Mori: This wine was #1 for the flight. It didn’t start as my #1 but it quickly got there with some time in glass. Dark blackberries, cherries, silky tannins, some floral and earth components, mouth watering acidity that was begging for something. The wife busted out some dark chocolate and Bam!...a pairing matched in heaven. VHR is one of those sites that is quickly becoming tops on my list along with Pritchard Hills, Eisele, Dr. Crane and To-Kalon. Memento Mori’s take on the VHR site is beautiful and it will be so fun to have tastings with friends and family when putting this up against the other 18’ Tor, VHR Estate, and Arrow and Branch interpretations of the historic site.

5/8/21, 1:37 PM - Awesome trip and comments/notes!!! I am just reading through them now and already miss not being there as I take the journey through your lens (I didn’t even drink wine when we got married but I have become a fast leaner).

These ‘18 are built Ford tough so it’s nice you had a chance to taste them with time to breathe.

Great notes and great story- I am moving on to the next story now!

    6/4/21, 2:16 AM - Greetings again,
This is Dave. First how is everything going with you? Only because I ran into it twice with VHR wines do you get any stemmy qualities? For some reason my tastebuds say no to that aspect in a wine. Dave

6/4/21, 12:21 PM - Hi Dave, I do not getting any stemmy characteristics from the MM wines. The differences in style are noticeable and if I were to find any sort of stemmy quality in wines based on the winemaker, it would probably by FP (VHR winemaker) and not Sam Kaplan.

I am looking forward to a tasting that I want to plan for the 18' vintage and wines made specifically from 100% Vine Hill Ranch grapes. This includes of course, the VHR Estate, the MM VHR, Arrow and Branch, and Tor VHR and/or Pure Magic. I wonder if I am missing any. I know there are others but there are either blended with other grapes from other sites or they are hush hush about what grapes are going into their particular wine (Bond comes to mind from what I have heard).

6/4/21, 12:36 PM - Highly highly suggest 2018 Keplinger VHR (they only make it in 2018 and from the barrel sample we had might be the best VHR out there).

6/4/21, 12:45 PM - Hi Lite - I do not see the 18' Keplinger VHR. Can you direct me to it?

  • LiteItOnFire commented:

6/4/21, 12:48 PM - It hasn’t been released yet- and only one barrel made. Shh don’t tell anyone :)

    6/10/21, 3:16 AM - Greetings again BSUMOBA,
I just read over your posting and for some reason missed the part you will be tasting wines that are of particular interest to me. Looking forward to your notes. Dave
