May 9, 2021 - First of the cults for me.
Decanted 75-80 min. Drank over one hour with steak dinner at restaurant
Beautiful light ruby red in the glass. Surprising translucency, none of the dark opacity that I traditionally see in the big cabs. More like a (darker) California pinot.
Unique nose of vanilla, red fruit, birthday cake, smokey dark chocolate. A sweetness pervades (bordering on the too sweet for me, but that’s personal taste).
Complex palate of black fruit, red fruit, earthiness.
The biggest surprise is how light it was overall. The fact that it’s a young ‘15 boggles the mind. Nothing like any other big cab I’ve had.

5/9/21, 8:51 AM - I started with older vintages and then tried younger ones. When I first tried the younger ones, I had a what the f moment. Like you, I had two surprises, the lighter color and the ‘saccharine’ like note when these are young. Older vintages seemingly integrate the sweet note.

5/9/21, 4:52 PM - Thanks for your very helpful note. Glad to have my what f moment validated. That’s really interesting and we now have a new incentive to try the older vintages!
