Community Tasting Note

  • Mark1npt Likes this wine: 95 points

June 20, 2021 - Informal notes at Vine Vault mega tasting 33 wines in all......all wines open 60-90 min by time they were consumed. Most were slow ox'd in bottle, some were double splash decanted, a few were straight decanted.

Well made, red/black fruit profile, quality, maybe a tad thin for To Kalon? I like it but not at this pricepoint.

6/20/21, 4:42 PM - Looks like one hell of an event. Where’s this Vine Vault? Are you in Atl?

6/20/21, 4:51 PM - Vine Vault is a storage and cold chain shipping company. They put on 4 one night events in FL and now 4 one night events in TX. 9 different Phillipe Melka contracted wineries, 3-4 wines tasted from each winery. A mix of mostly '16, '17 and '18s with a couple of older library wines thrown in. $145pp. They are doing another tour with 8 different wineries in Aug in FL and TX again, Nick.

6/20/21, 5:00 PM - Ah nice. I store my wine at the Atlanta Vine Vault and know Elton well. Great place and I use their logistics often to get stuff delivered in the summer. Haven’t done many of their events but looks like a few are coming up. Glad y’all had such a cool event.

6/21/21, 3:53 AM - Yes I used to store there too in ATL. I knew they were in FL but didn’t know about Houston. I still get mailers for many of their events but haven’t seen this one come through for Atlanta.

6/21/21, 3:54 AM - Thin seems to a characteristic of some of the wines of this vintage… I hope they will gain some weight with rest in the cellar.

6/21/21, 5:31 AM - Seems they are only doing TX and FL this summer.

6/21/21, 5:33 AM - So many of the wines seemed the same, especially the '18s. I think they'll be really good, just don't know when?

6/21/21, 9:54 AM - Interesting note on TK. I've found several producers to be a bit thin fruited on the early going. I guess when you drink enough grape concentrated sledge hammers the To Kalon might feel this way side by side.

  • Mark1npt commented:

6/21/21, 1:09 PM - MJP.....these were not aired the best for the event. Maybe 4 more hours of decant would have let this one gain some weight and deepen? Hard to compare so many wines at an event like this because there was quite a mix of vintages ubt overall I see it even in B Cellars that the TK drinks a little lighter/more uplifted than LPV or G3 or Crane.
