June 22, 2021 - Bottle: Winebid purchase from ~12 years ago. Low shoulder fill so low expectations. 15% abv.
Color: Deep garnet with slight browning at the rim.
Nose: Deep nose of roast beef and cherry preserves. Some exotic spice element that I can't put my finger on. Very rich, complex and interesting. The high alcohol makes its presence known. Almost port like.
Palate: Sweet, jammy and lively on the palate. Very "late harvest" in character and somewhat hot which is not surprising given the high (especially for the day) abv. Deep fruit with spicy cola notes and a bit of tannin on the long, satisfying finish.
Overall: The back label states that the wine is from very young vines and the grapes were not harvested until November. Certainly not typical of wines of that era and remarkable that it is still drinking so well. A unique experience.
