June 13, 2021 - This Sicilian white may not be an award-winning Pinot Grigio but still has decent QPR at $10 a bottle. The dry un-oaked wine pairs nicely with shellfish and seafood as well as vegetarian dishes, such as cheese pizza, white sauce pasta and salads. It can also serves as a tangy pre-dinner aperitif with charcuterie and cheeses.

Pinot Grigio is more commonly associated with northern Italy, even though Sicily is the oldest winemaking region in the country. This relatively new winery Barone Montalto (founded in 2000) manages close to a thousands acres throughout the island. Their “Watercolour” series come from vineyards near Santa Ninfa in the heart of the Belice Valley. The terroir is dark alluvial-based soils of medium texture and organic matter with a mix of limestone and sand.

The result is an exotic example of Pinot Grigio with its straw-like, pale gold colour. The nose has fresh notes of pear, green apple and which peaches. The palate follows closely with balanced acidity plus hints of coriander and lime notes. The extended finish is crisp with surprising depth. This complexity suggests that Pinot Grigio can be much more than simply an easy-drinking lightweight white … not bad for a very inexpensive wine.

    Cheers. 🥂
