July 31, 2021 - Purchased at retail in June 2021. Drank over two days. Opened at 1:30, poured into a decanter, immediately poured right back into the bottle and then recorked so we could bring it to a friend's. Upon arriving at our friend's, we poured it into a decanter at around 3:30, where it sat (minus two tasting glasses) until 6:30 or so. At first nose and taste, a nearly impenetrable wall of tannins. With lots of coaxing in the glass plus time, the tannins started to give way to the fruit. Wonderful savory notes of cedar, leather, graphite and perhaps walnut came through before giving way to blackberries and dark chocolate on the finish. We drank this alongside the 2006 Malescot, pairing with grilled steaks. In our unscientific tests, the Malescot was better with the food, but the Croix de Beaucaillou was still quite nice. At around 8:30, about two glasses were poured from the decanter back into the bottle where it was recorked and then vacuvin-ed (if that's a word?) around 10:30. The last two glasses the following day were completely devoid of the wall of tannins and only the savory and fruit notes remained. The texture was silky smooth, though the finish was not as pronounced as the prior evening, (ave for the dark chocolate which was much more noticeable. Overall a very nice wine that is at or approaching its peak, though be prepared for a long decant time.
