Community Tasting Note

  • Margaux Bro Likes this wine: 96 points

August 2, 2021 - Light, Delicate, still full of life. Very mellow, but in a nice spot with a touch of acidity and bing cherry that almost tastes burgundian. This bottle couldn't have been in better shape and more fulfilling. Probably the best diamond creek I've had.

    8/2/21, 11:31 PM - Hi MB,

I have several of these in my cellar since release in the 80's which have always been well stored. The last time I popped one was about 3 or 4 years ago and there wasn't much to it. I remember it being rather acidic and hollow.

I have noticed while following the reviews of the '85 Volcanic Creek on CT that there have been numerous positive reviews and several negative reviews that are similar to my experiences with the wine

Now I would like to reapproach the wine and I am curious as to whether or not you decanted your bottle, and if so for how long, and also what it's provenance was.

As an aside, Parker in the Advocate reviewed it in 1995 and gave it 58 points. I've always wondered if there wasn't some serious bottle variation with this wine.

8/3/21, 3:46 AM - Likely bottle variation. I acquired mine from a private collector (which was stored properly during his possession but unknown previously). For decanting, I set the bottle upright in the cellar a week ago, and I double decanted for sediment & strained with cheesecloth immediately before serving. For a benchmark, we had 1992 Togni Napa, and 97 Margaux served alongside, and the DC was better than both IMO. Hope this helps!

8/3/21, 7:47 AM - Yes, I figure bottle variation as I purchased the wine when it was a current release from a very reputable source and never subjected it to abuse. It's been in my storage account practically since shortly after purchase, have tried 2 of 6 over the years.

Think I'll roast me a prime rib, invite some friends over, and have a 1985 Cali Cab event this fall. Time to get to some of my remaining 1985's such as Phelps Backus, Eisele, & Insignia, BV Private Reserve, and Laurel Glen Cab...and of course give the Diamond Creek another shot following your protocol.

Hopefully it'll be a tasty blast!
