Community Tasting Note

  • Mark1npt Likes this wine: 95 points

October 2, 2021 - 5 hour decant with an additional 2 splashes before putting back into the bottle to take to the restaurant for a great meal with Joel and Diane. Food and company were exceptional, however this bottle not as great as previous. 93 pts initially even with all the decant, still a bit tight and astringent yet soft in the mouth at the same time. Red/dark red fruited. Some good layers to the fruit but no 'wow' there. Still some under cork in the bottle in the cellar to try tonight to see if there's any further improvement. Addendum to follow.

Addendum next night.....a little darker fruit, nose more classic, weight in the mouth a little heavier. Better by 2 points the first hour so now a 95. 2nd hour much more astringency shows up so going to hold the rest of these for many years.

10/3/21, 9:33 AM - Fantastic wine, thanks so much for sharing it. I agree with your comment & score when 1st tasted, but an easy 96 & rising by the end of the meal. Like many 05s, just peeking into their potential. This is a great one that may have greater longevity than me. Loved meeting you both & hopefully we'll do it again soon!

10/3/21, 9:42 AM - We feel the same way, Joel...great evening! I'll be very curious to see how this bottle drunks tonight. It was the only sub par bottle last night. Thanks again for bringing such nice wines!

10/4/21, 3:38 AM - Your 2000th note and it is an Angelus??!! So jealous I jumped to comment before even reading it…

10/4/21, 3:40 AM - Ah too bad not as good as you had hoped, I hope you can taste on day 2. 2005 is a weird vintage and for Angelus still quite young anyway. An extra day may have opened it up…

10/4/21, 5:07 AM - Sounds like a great night! I agree with Jennifer, 2005's in general seem to be aging at a snail's pace, and Angelus is generally not the first of any vintage to be ready! However, I would have thought with a 5 hour decant, it would have performed better.....off bottle, perhaps? (Not that 93 is a "bad" score, just not what I would expect from that producer).

10/4/21, 5:13 AM - Jen, a little better the 2nd night, but only in the first hour. This was better 2 years ago. Maybe in one of those funky phases or maybe just not a great bottle? Still good, but quite pricey for this score.
