October 23, 2021 - Beautiful burnished gold color, with a bit of a rosy copper glow. On the nose, it smells of old things: bruised apple, moldering underbrush (in a good way), old leather, old wood, old libraries. It's not complex, but it has a nobility of bearing. With some air in the glass, there is also an evocative whiff of lemon-iced cookie—perhaps a glimpse back in time to its youth? On the palate, it's similarly obviously aged, with very modest remaining mousse, and just a suggestion of apple fruit lingering. But again there is an elegance and refinement to its simplicity, with a straight-backed, disciplined posture in its acidic structure and a chalky bitterness amplified by a rich hint of almond liqueur.
it's obvious that I've held this bottle of NV longer than the producer intended (no disgorgement date is provided, but I bought this bottle in January 2014). But it's a testament to the winemaking and the quality of the grapes that it has evolved into something different and compelling in this "off-label use," as it were.185 views
