December 12, 2021 - My wine education started many years ago with the Loire Valley and particularly Clos Rougeard which was a revelation as to what the Loire Valley can produce, both red and white. My love for Chenin Blanc started there, and this particular bottle took a major role in it. That's why these notes are probably biased, though this wine has many times in the past been referred to as one of the greatest sweet white wines in France.
Under the foil, the cork seemed dead at first, and potentially loose. However, thanks to Clos Rougeard's choice for long corks and special bottle design, the lower part of the cork was actually in a good condition. After hearing the normal pop, I brought my nose to the bottle neck. One whiff and all memories of this wine came back to me in the fraction of a second. This smell was exactly how I remembered it.
Slightly fizzy and musky upon opening, it all blew off with some air. Quince, sea shells, candied apricot, with very high residual sugar, it finishes long possibly with hints of bitter orange. This didn't feel heavy and was just a marvelous experience.
