January 9, 2022 - Way overhyped for the quality. For $246 I would rate it a ZERO. Good, not great. Piper-Heidsieck Red is better IMHO.

1/9/22, 8:43 AM - You're definitely in the minority on this board, but, I am with you...Trouble is, most champagne snobs don't drink PH Red, so they dont know....Happy Sunday :-)

1/9/22, 9:02 AM - Thanks for your moral support. I'm glad Im not a champagne snob. There is actually a better Heidsieck family champagne called Charles Heidsieck Brut and Brut Reserve. The regular brut is fine at a little more $ than PH Red, but it's harder to find.

1/9/22, 9:17 AM - When you get a minute, please take the time to look at my notes on Dom 08 and Charles Heidsieck Brut. I think you and I can be friends :-)

There is a very investing comment thead on my Dom 08 review that addresses the shutdown theory.

1/9/22, 9:18 AM - Wonder if it's just shutdown or you had a compromised bottle. Haven't had yet, but have heard great things.

1/9/22, 9:56 AM - I catch your drift about CH. Glad you turned heads away from Cristal. I don't think the bottle I drank was shut down. It was very smooth and pleasurable, just not very complex, lacking an overall rounded drinking experience. I had it at a friends house in Naples FL last night. It was a gift to him from American Express for spending so much money with his credit card. But, I am mostly a big red wine drinker and pinot fan, not as experienced with champagne.

1/9/22, 5:47 PM - Dom Perignon is overrated. Any vintage. Even the Dom Perignon representative was like "eh"

1/11/22, 12:13 PM - wcf1946, do you mean Piper-Heidseick Rare or the regular NV with label?

  • wcf1946 commented:

1/11/22, 12:31 PM - I'm talking about the NV Piper with the red label. Charles-Heidsieck Brut Reserve is even better at a little higher price. It is harder to find.

  • FredericoWines commented:

1/11/22, 12:43 PM - I'd tried Piper NV red label and found it just meh. Charles-Heidseick Brut Reserve is definitely better but still no match for DP, particularly '08

    1/11/22, 2:02 PM - Piper Rare > Dom P

  • FredericoWines commented:

1/11/22, 2:11 PM - 10xM, Rare is better than Dom P, could be. But no way is Piper NV red label :)

  • 10xM commented:

1/11/22, 2:16 PM - Fred, agree on that.

  • wcf1946 commented:

1/11/22, 2:20 PM - No question DP is better, but I would still rather have 6 bottles of PH to one of DP. Charles Heidsieck is close to the quality, but, again, I am talking about QPR. I don't know "Rare" since I mostly drink fine red wine.
