April 9, 2022 - After digging into my recent arrivals of Maillart Champagne, I decided to try the 2017 Jolivettes, 2017 Mont Martin, and 2014 Chaillots Gillis. Punchline: Anyone who is holding these bottles should continue to do so. All performed solidly and have the requisite elements and comportment to become more complex and interesting versions of themselves; but, for now, the effervescence is pronounced, the fruit is linear (though beautifully focused), and the finish is direct and confined to a narrower scope of expansion. The layering in all of these wines has yet to be developed.

The 2014 Chaillots Gillis is a refreshing mix of white and high-riding yellow fruit surrounded by a whirlwind of seemingly never-ending bubbles. Sea spray and salt rock zests add interest. Depth is on standby at the moment, though it starts to show its hand a bit more with some open air in a large Bordeaux stem. A very promising Chaillots Gillis, though I’m not sure it’ll reach the soaring heights of the 2012. Time will tell. Let this hang out on its side for a few years minimum. Try again in 2025. 93/(94?)+ points.

    Disgorged 3/2021. 0 dosage. 12.5% ABV. BdB - 100% Chardonnay; vines planted in 1963.
