Community Tasting Note

  • gteran76 Likes this wine: 94 points

April 8, 2022 - Opened with a regular corkscrew and the cork crumbled and broke into pieces. Also the top was red which may be a sign of heat at some point. So I choose not to decant, vaccumed and placed in the fridge for about one hour.

We started the night with a 2018 Rhys Alpine Chard (93+) and then drank Poetry about 3 hours after opened it…

The wine is clear, clean, beautiful nose of flowers, bright acidity, low in tannins, very nice complexity and good finish. It’s a great wine to pair with pastas, cheese or filet mignon.

Drink of hold but I don’t see it getting any better. At least our bottle!

I had a '15 Moon Fantasy the other night and it really performed well with 6+ hours of air. Went from a weak, indecisive red into this dark, rich, powerful red by the end of the night.

4/19/22, 4:36 PM - Gt.......I am not ashamed to admit I am a bit of a 'cost conscious' wine consumer.....by that I mean, if I can get a 94-95 point wine for $100 why would I spend $200 to get a 97 pointer?

In that instance, I am a big believer in their basic entry wine, Ontogeny. No better bang for the buck in Napa. I do however, feel partial to the EE Tench. An homage to the fellow who, basically saved Russell Bevan's bacon early in his winemaking career.

As an aside, I had the great pleasure of sitting at Russell's dining room table with two friends this past January and tasting thru almost his entire '19 lineup. Unfortunately, I was nursing a kidney stone and not feeling up to my normal wine self. I think he did include a few of our tasting points in his notes for the '19s when they were released, however. Cool wine night! Cheers, pal!

4/20/22, 2:36 PM - You are correct once again. I also like going for the 95 pts for about $100 than the higher priced/scored. I even dislike buying (not drinking) the 100pts because normally they are not better than those 98s and prices are cruel most of the time. So I only buy them when not a big premium, which is not often.

Very nice experience with Russel, I hope the “night ended up safe… ;-)”

4/21/22, 8:18 AM - I agree, I try not to 'chase' the 100 pt wines because they are so often overpriced and not any better than 97-98 pt wines, generally speaking. In fact, even though I've had quite a few 100 pt wines, I've NEVER given them 100 pts, myself. Critic's scores are so subjective and susceptible to the mood, the food, the company, even the weather! I feel all the stars must align just right for you to possibly get that 100 pt experience....plus, you have to catch the wine at the exact right time. 100 pt wines are NOT 100 pts ALL the time, and people so easily forget that fact. Plus, you and I both know there are some critics out there who's scores are not always very accurate, so many times you have to throw those 99-100 pt scores out the window. Nothing worse than spending big bucks for a 100 pt wine, when it really isn't a 100 pt wine.
