    May 21, 2022 - The BC $10 - $20 - $30 - $40 Challenge (T&F's on Blueback): Had blind - second flight - wine "C" of A to D.

Mid colour. Musty earth on the nose. No real fruit was coming through. A sour finish. Overpowering alcohol. This was my least favourite wine of the flight, although for what's its worth I didn't enjoy a single wine from the flight.

Overall, this was the most disappointing wine of the evening for me.

    5/22/22, 7:27 PM - I’m sorry this sounds like a painful wine event! ;)
I’d say this Hourglass needs four hours decant at this point. Canoehead and I had a 2019 Hourglass the other week and it had a looooong decant and then got better after hour six.

In general, I think Nota Bene's are made more to age, whereas the Grand Total tends to be more approachable early on. The Hourglass is a wine with the social skills of someone that was home schooled.

5/23/22, 9:06 AM - I just got up to the keyboard after falling on the ground in laughter! I understand the patience part, but I try to keep all my bigger BC reds for several years past vintage date. I find them much better. It’s nice when you find some that are great right away. I’ve had a Grand Total that was awesome immediately, but then faded away quickly too. Dick Lancaster gave a friend and I a superb tasting in 2012. We were the only people in Black Widow and he let us try a vertical of Hourglass and brought out some charcuterie. We ended up buying his last few bottles of 2008 Hourglass. I’m guessing you guys didn’t finish the losers!?

5/23/22, 9:18 AM - There were definitely a few bottles that didn't get finished - it's actually a fun way of seeing what people go back to after-the-fact. As you'd expect, there was lots of Open and Peller. There was also a lot of Old Vines Foch, Talon and Celestiale left. And no, we didn't finish the Hourglass.

And I agree with you on the Grand Total - we had a 16 a week ago, and while it was delicious, don't think it has the structure to age particularly well.

I used to loved the Old Vines Foch, but haven’t bought it for a while (in fact, I don’t see it very often).

5/23/22, 9:43 AM - There is a typo on the back of the 2018 OVF label - that more or less sums up where the wine has headed in recent years - it used to be decent.
