Introduction

The last meeting of Chevalier de Table Rouge before the summer break. A nice number of wines, fun to taste, good company!

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2004 Bottega Brunello di Montalcino Il Vino dei Poeti Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
85 points
Tasted double blind. This was quite a light red with a brown edge to it. The nose was very much toasted oak and cassis. The palate had a distinct aged aspect to it, very little tannins, red berries such as rasberries. Once revealed I was surprised that it was a) a Brunello and b) so young. This tasted like an aged Cab Sauv to me.
Red
2007 Bottega Ripasso della Valpolicella Classico Superiore Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Ripasso della Valpolicella Classico Superiore
85 points
Tasted double blind. A very dark purple. Lots of pepper and sweet cherries on the nose, also the same on the palate, with lots of tannins. I was thinking Grenache or Syrah and was very surprised that it was a Ripasso. Neither of the Bottegas tonight were very representative I think.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Château Semeillan-Mazeau France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Listrac-Médoc
90 points
Oh my, a text book Bordeaux, such strong barnyard smells and cassis, just wonderful! Lots of fruit and some tannins on the palate as well. Really stinky wine, great stuff!
Red
2006 Spier Cabernet Sauvignon Private Collection South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
88 points
Tasted double blind. A very dark purple. Lots of dark fruit, cassis and quite a bit of oak as well. Lots of tannins and cassis on the palate as well and a small smokey side taste that led me to guess South Africa. For this wine I was on a roll, I guessed Cab Sauv and 2006 as well! Nice, could use a few years in the cellar to calm down.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2004 Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
86 points
Tasted double blind. OK, so this time I thought it was a quite nice wine, the oak was not so dominant. Lots of cassis on both the nose and palate, a strong wine.
Red
2006 Domaine de Chamans Minervois Hegarty Les Chamans France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Minervois
A nice juicy wine with that strong physallis component. Definitely unique (in my tasting history) and a fun wine to show others. See previous notes for details.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Casa Vinicola Calatrasi Nero d'Avola Sicilia Terre di Ginestra Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
86 points
Tasted double blind. My first Nero d'Avola. Lots of dark fruits on the palate, a bit of a citrus side whiff. Lots of tannins and dark fruit on the palate as well. Another strong wine.
Red
2006 Raimat Costers del Segre Viña 19 Spain, Catalunya, Costers del Segre
83 points
Tasted double blind. A dark red, lots of rasberries on the nose and the alcohol pushing through. Lots of tannins and dark fruit on the palate. Not very exceptional.

Closing

I brought the Bordeaux and the Languedoc, the rest were from the others. Great fun!
