WWS Riesling Night

Introduction

I got to pick the theme for June's tasting, so, predictably, I went with German Riesling. The group continued to deliver admirable selections, including a sneaky inclusion of an Oregon wine. I was expecting more young wines, so it was quite fun to see a good mix of ages in the flight.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

Steely mineral on the nose along with apricots and apple skins. It hints at being rich, with some honeysuckle notes showing as well. Light peaches play early on the palate. They get a little rich, and then fade away. The acid is a bit weaker, and it gets a little sharp as it dries out. The experience wraps up fairly quickly, but the flavors are nice.

The nose here is light, showing candied apples and some bread crust. The texture is enjoyable on contact, and fully ripe red apples show up immediately. The apples linger as soft acid slowly dries things out on the palate. The dry sensation, and some simple apple flavors do last for a long time. The wine is clean, but definitely on the sweeter side, starting at the mid palate. The finish is solid, long, and slow. I enjoyed this much more when sipped as opposed to taking big drinks.

Ripe pears show on the nose, as well as full on parts cleaner. Imagine eating pears right after doing some engine work, and you've got what this nose smells like. Pure apples show on the palate, and the parts cleaner appears as well, but it's not destructive. The apples linger at mid strength, and some guava peeks out as the finish sets in. Lighter acid makes the mouth water, and a sensation of richness shows up as the finish runs out. 90-

Spicy apple pie scents fill the nose, along with a hint of some kind of sweetener. Lovely apple flavors show on the palate along with mid strength acid. The acidity spreads across the whole mouth as the finish sets in, and some apple peel flavors show. The fruit is quite tasty, a bit of petrol shows on the mid palate, and the acid later makes me itch for another pour.

This nose is on the lighter side with some bright apples and a perfumed note showing. It's super clean on contact, and then it quickly delivers a burst of sweetness. Lots of sweet pear flavors show on the mid palate, and they become more distinct as the wine evolves. The pear flavors remain above the acidity that lingers lightly underneath. Big sips bring out some bigger acidity, which I like. The fruit is primary, and the structure isn't entirely integrated, but I still like it.

Rich apples, and a surprising but full cucumber scent appear on the nose with a hint of pecan pie in the background. It's delicate upon contact with the palate. Lovely apple flavors slowly evolve into the mid palate where the cucumbers also appear. The apple flavors are eclipsed by the acidity later and the wine becomes mouth wateringly dry as the pecan pie from the nose makes a brief and subtle appearance. Tasty and interesting!

Ripe apples and some petrol on the nose, along with a faint herbal note. This shows some great acid on contact! Crisp and clean apple flavors are perfectly integrated with a hint of honeysuckle and the wonderful acidity. There's a hint of richness that rises early on the finish, but always stays underneath the clean acidity. The balance on this is just killer! The apples are more and more delicious as I take more sips. The acidity is mouthwatering and stays bright from beginning to end. To top it off, all of these wonderful sensations run out an a long finish. This wine rocks, and this score is totally out of context with my usual scope. But, I'm actually having a hard time imagining things that would make this experience better.

The nose is a bit tropical, and it shows some mango and ripe pear scents. It delivers a great juicy sensation with some enjoyable apple flavors on the palate. The apple flavors are pretty sweet on the mid palate. The acid rises up on the mid palate, and slowly comes to the fore as the apples linger. The acidity is drying on the top of the mouth. All of the components work well together.

The nose is kind of spicy showing rhubarb, peaches, and some brown sugar. It's sweet all the way across the palate and persists later. The acidity is full, and evolves nicely. Good apple flavors dominate. Everything is clean and enjoyable. The flavors are a bit simple, but still nice.

The nose is sweet and gives sweet apple and pineapple scents. Apples and honey are a bit simple on the palate. The acidity is on the lighter side, but it still plays. The wine is clean but the sweetness is full and it lingers long. The honey is tasty and bigger sips bring some full peach flavors as well. Some acidity grows on the center of the tongue, but the sweetness stays in the forefront.
