Flight 1 (8 notes)
White
2008 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
nose: very floral
palate: some alcohol was evident, though I enjoyed the moderately weighty palate, lightly stemmy in nature. OK. I've come to suspect that I'm not much of a white CdP fan, though, as they always seem to alcoholic to my palate. NR

1997 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

WOTN
nose: animal, spicy, a bit musky, but not unappetizing
palate: sweet berry, just a lovely palate with perfect presence on the tongue. Savory and sweet at the same time. I loved the completeness of the palate.

1999 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape
87 points
nose: warm, red fruit. almost goopy in comparison to the 97 Beaucastel tasted prior
palate: thicker palate, acidity was not as balanced as I like, or as exhibited by the two wines before.

Red
1999 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
nose: bacon-y, with licorice and other meaty, olive-like flavors
palate: I went back and forth on this one - at first I enjoyed the richness of the flavors and the spice on the palate, then I fought with the alcohol, then I got sucked back in by the meaty character and complexity of the fruit...I would have liked to examine this more closely, or returned to it after some air. Sadly, didn't get to it. This needs a revisit, though.

Red
2007 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape
nose: sweet olives, a bit dusky
palate: intense and beautiful fruit, but alcohol was high and tannin was ripping my tongue apart. NR, too young. THough I expect I might be bothered further down the road by alcohol...we shall see.

2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée
93 points
nose: dark, with olive and also sweetly perfumed (violets?)
palate: stately, very structured, very nice. Fantastic wine, actually, with al its components in place.

Red
2000 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul
the nose was more chocolately than any of the other CdPs tasted alongside, but I sensed too much alcohol on the palate, though the structure was finely balanced. NR, as I'm pretty sure my palate was shot by this time.
Red
2004 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau
92 points
nose: tar, sappy. very focused/penetrating nose, with smoky essence.
palate: light mouthfeel, dominated by raspberry and other red berries, soft tannin, rather delicate. I enjoyed this quite a bit.
