Beat the Heat Tasting

The Tasting Room - Uptown Park

Tasted July 31, 2010 by cartime with 587 views

Introduction

Like every Tasting Room event, it was crowded, the wines weren't that great on average, and the prices are generally above retail. That being said, I got to try 30+ wines for $20. Not to mention the good company and decent food.

Flight 1 (14 notes)

Red
2006 Montes Alpha M Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
91 points
Complex nose of red and black fruit, mocha, green pepper, and barnyard. Lush, yet earthy, cassis and black cherry flavors with mocha and spice. Fairly well balanced, with moderate tannins. Medium plus finish. Really nice, just not sure about the price tag.

Rosé
2008 Domaine de Jarras Pink Flamingo France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays des Sables du Golfe du Lion
86 points
Apparently the reincarnation of a wine known as Pink Flamingo. Blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Cinsault and 5% Carignan. Light-bodied rosé with flavors of strawberry, herbs, flowers and sandy minerals. Not quite completely dry, which is not what I look for in French rosé.
Rosé
2007 Kim Crawford Pansy! Rosé New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
83 points
Strawberry and cherry flavors. Lacking crispness. This is over the hill. Poach some pears with it.
White
2009 Stellina di Notte Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie Italy, Delle Venezie
87 points
Stone fruit and light citrus flavors. Light-bodied, but with decent concentration for Italian PG.
White
2008 Montes Chardonnay Classic Series Chile, Curico Valley
86 points
Spicy tropical fruit nose. Decent acidity, but too ripe and over-oaked.
Red
2007 Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Classic Series Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
87 points
Cassis, green pepper, blackberry, and oak. Nice balance. Medium tannins. Nothing special, but generally inoffensive.
White
2007 Michel Picard Vouvray France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
87 points
Floral, citrusy, and lightly sweet with a dry, tart lemon finish. Not a whole lot of experience with Chenin Blanc, so I can't speak to whether or not this is a good example of the varietal. That being said, this is tasty and a pleasant sipper.
White
2008 Martín Códax Albariño Rías Baixas Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas
88 points
A crisp, citrusy white with well-balanced acidity that'll go well with all sorts of light food. Significantly better compared to 9 months ago, when the acidity was enough to strip the enamel off my teeth. Did this benefit from the extra bottle time, or is this bottle variation? My hunch is the latter.
White
2008 Tulip Winery White Tulip Israel, Galilee, Upper Galilee
86 points
Disjointed nose of tropical fruit, white flowers, and cat's pee. Tasty pear, tropical fruit, and grapefruit palate. Medium acidity. Medium-plus finish. Interesting wine - not sure how to pair this. Drink cold.
White
2009 Pelter Sauvignon Blanc Israel, Galilee, Golan Heights
83 points
Very light in color, almost clear. Grassy nose of cat's pee and white grapefruit. Grassy and lacking fruit on the crisp palate. Would not try again.
Red
2008 Tortoise Creek Wines Pinot Noir Vin de Pays d'Oc France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
87 points
Jammy cherry and raspberry nose. Earthy cherry palate. Light bodied with decent acidity. Not terribly complex, but a nice drink.
White
2009 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Drachenstein Riesling Dragonstone Germany, Rheingau
86 points
Tons of sulfur on the nose initially. Apple, pear, and citrus fruit. Sweet and lacking acidity. I have really liked previous vintages of this wine, but this was a disappointment.
Red
2007 Lemelson Vineyards Pinot Noir Thea's Selection USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
90 points
Earthy red fruit with cigar box and rich, spicy notes. Nice balance. Medium length finish. Would buy again.
Red
2007 Picket Fence Pinot Noir USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
87 points
Really nice earthy black cherry flavors and good acidity that are totally overpowered by too much alcohol. Recommend drinking this young and at cellar temp.
