Introduction

Preparing for summer - having collected several reasonably priced Sauvignon Blancs, wanted to see which one was the best.

2002 Origin Sauvignon Blanc (~$24)
2004 Peju Savignon Blanc (~$17)
2004 Sawyer Cellars Sauvignon Blanc (~$17)

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Classic - light straw color. grassy nose, a little hay in there too. Clean taste from start to finish. Fruit and acid in balance - lovely. Pear and vanilla flavors.

For some reason the smell puts me off a bit - like a bad vanilla candle - maybe that's OK but I hate those candles. Nuts - I taste nuts - not what I'd expect from a Sauvignon Blanc - but I love that. Also some crisp fruit, starts crisp and then goes to the nut thing. Lingering finish. A little cloying, not as clean as I'd like though. A decent effort.

Peach and mineral notes on the nose. Crisp almost effervescent on the tip of the tonuge - a little too bright for my taste. Would be better with some spicy food - would definitely stand up to it. Melon flavors that linger nicely, but leave a heavy coating that distracts.

Closing

OK, so the Origin SB (now called Source-Napa) is more than 20 ($24) but the extra bucks are well spent. The Sawyer and Peju are both about $17. The Peju was overpoweringly bright. The Sawyer was nice, different in a good way. The Origin - awesome, especially for the price. It is everything that an SB should be. I have their "Heart Block" and will have to compare to the regular - just to see if the extra $25 is worth it.
