Introduction

The Darwin Beefsteak and Burgundy club met for the first time at Crustaceans on the Wharf to sample its fair and consume some nice wines. All wines were Henschke and as to be expected all the wines were excellent quality.

Flight 1 - Entree (2 notes)

Entree was Territory Tiger Prawns served on a mango and macadamia salad. With two Rieslings to drink with the food it was useful to compare the two styles. Initially the Green Hills worked best but wfater some glass time the Gerwurztraminer gave a good showing.

White
2004 Henschke Gewürztraminer Joseph Hill Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
87 points
Pale gold little bit of green in colour, secondary aromas of the riesling kerosine smell that goes after a some glass time. There are floral primary aromas. It is relatively simple in structure with a short to medium length and only a hint of Gewurztraminer sweetness.
White
2003 Henschke Riesling Green's Hill Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Lenswood
88 points
Clear and bright, pale yellow in colour with a hint of green. Fragrant citrus primary aromas with some floral edges. There is a slight kerosine boucquet coming through. It is still a little simple in its complexity but likely to increase in complexity with some time in the bottle. It has a medium length and good finish.

Flight 2 - Mains (2 notes)

A selection of either Fillet Mignon en Croute served with button mushroon jus, or, ocean caught Barramundi fillet served with potato mash, steamed vegetables and lemon beurre blanc sauce. Both dishes were supurb and extremely generous servings and worked very well with the Euphonium, more so with the beef than the fish.

Red
2002 Henschke Euphonium Keyneton Estate Australia, South Australia, Barossa
90 points
Deep crimson in colour, bright and clear. Primary aromas of spicy fruit and berrys. Medium complexity, no mouth griping tannins and even though it has a high alcohol content this did not come through. It has good balance and a medium to long finish.
Red
2001 Henschke Abbotts Prayer Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Lenswood
92 points
Deep crimson in colour, with a primary aroma of mulberries and plums, with some secondary aromas of cedar and bitumen. It is full bodied with a good length and great taste. This is a very good pleasant drinking wine.

Flight 3 - Blind Tasting (1 note)

The blind tatsing had a three way draw for those who had picked it. The final succesful winner on the night, Karen, scored a bottle of Charles Melton Nine Popes. The hope is she will share it with us.

Red
2001 Henschke Cyril Henschke Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
90 points
Crimson red in colour, bright and clear. Excellent aromas of redcurrent and berries. The tannins are subdued and velevty and little shiraz peper remains. It is a very full bodied wine that has a medium length. It seems to have gone a little flat and needs some more bottle time.

Flight 4 - Desert (1 note)

Spun sugar baskets with fresh fruit, topped with watermeon sorbet. The Henschke Boytris went well with this desert however the slight the tartness of the watermelon sorbet did knock the balance of the wine around a little.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Henschke Riesling Noble Rot Riesling Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
88 points
Light gold in colour with a sweet and fragrant nose. Good balance and not super sweet. It is a relatively simple wine with a medium length. Its no Noble One but not a bad substitute.
