Introduction

Very fun evening of wine and wine talk with some jazz to boot and a little rock and roll discussion as well.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Rosé
2006 Château d'Esclans Côtes de Provence Rosé France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
88 points
Salmon color. Nice minerality, herbs, and a bit of spice on the nose. Palate is consistent, but lacks much in the way of fruit. May be beginning to show its age. I would have liked to have had this a couple of years ago.
Red
2004 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Dark Red Purple . Decanted for 1.5 hr and drank over an additional 3 hours. Showing nicely at presentiation, but really evolved over the evening, consistent with previous experience that required a 4 hours decant. This clearly needs time, but if you are patient and decant well, this will reward. Nose is aromatic with with cassis, pencil lead, herbs, a bit of smoke and sweet black cherry. The palate is concentrated with ripe black fruits and round tannins. My WOTN. 94-95pts.
Red
2006 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Deep red color. Decanted for 1.5 hours, drank over 3 hours. Nose shows big licorice, garrigue, meat/game, smoke, and later cherry. The palate shows tart cherry, spice, meat. The finish is moderately long. It's hard to complain about a wine this good, but it did not show nearly as well as the last bottle, which was simply exquisite. Everything was the same; bottle variation? 94pts.
Red
2005 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Quet France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Deep red color. Nose is very herbaceous, mint, pepper, a bit of heat for me. The palate currently lacks fruit and shows mostly the leather, spice and herb profile with a bit too much acidity for my taste. I have to disagree with the comment "massive fruit attack on the palate". It wasn't in this bottle anyway. 91pts.

WOTN for me was the '04 Pichon Lalande. Thanks to Matt for hosting and providing the starter rose!
