Shiraz tasting with some big wines

Tasted December 12, 2010 by Zoltán Németi with 513 views

Introduction

We took the controversial, blockbuster-styled Takler Syrah Reserve and put it into a line of New World shirazes, and tasted them blind. The wines did fairly well, one little disappointment was the Greenock Creek, which did not live up to expectations (109 Euro and a 99 points Parker rating), but otherwise is an interesting wine. The winner was from Chile...

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2008 Mollydooker Shiraz The Boxer Australia, South Australia
89 points
17% ABV. The nose offers sweet plum, blackcurrant, blackberry fruits, it's ripe but not overripe, even though it's a late harvested wine. Oak plays a supporting role with chocolate and coconut notes, and there is also some Aussie mint. Silken entry onto the palate which is smooth and loaded with dark fruits. Full-bodied with oak spices, medium acidity and tannins. Initially balanced, but high alcohol becames more obvious as the palate builds towards the end, resulting in a hot finish. Rather delicious than serious, it's a fun fruitbomb, if slightly hot.
Red
2006 Langmeil Shiraz The Freedom 1843 Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
flawed
Corked. Was 60 Euro. Not funny. Dear producers, stop using natural cork. There is screwcap, DIAM etc. out there.
Red
2007 John Duval Wines Shiraz Entity Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
14,5% ABV. Almost elegant for a Barossa Shiraz, and it is already drinking well. Spicy plums on the nose, with a touch of vanilla and dark chocolate. Not a hint of over-ripeness. The palate is medium-bodied and round, with plums, blackcurrants, and good length. No detectable heat.
Red
2004 Greenock Creek Shiraz Creek Block Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
92 points
16% ABV. This is not an oaky New World fruitbomb, at least not at this stage. Powerful, ripe nose showing leather, dried plums, tar and thyme. The palate is rich and dense, with light tannins, but the most significant sensation here is that of an extreme saltiness, which may put some off. Really, really salty. Some heat on the finish, but saltiness is rather striking here, than alcohol. Interesting wine of real character. 92-93 points
Red
2007 Takler Syrah Reserve Hungary, Dél-Pannónia, Szekszárdi
92 points
16% ABV. Syrah is a relative newcomer to Hungary, but already showing it's potential. This is the first vintage of this wine, from a single vineyard in the sunny Szekszárd region, from a very hot year. It's a big, hedonistic wine that is a little overripe but retains enough freshness at the same time. Intense and rich nose of dried plum, sour cherry, liquorice, spices, tobacco. Very complex. Warm dark fruits on the palate, with a hint of coffee, massive concentration, and lovely natural acidity. Hot finish. Powerful rather than polished. Not sure if it can get better with age.
Red
2006 Montes Syrah Folly La Finca de Apalta Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
94 points
15% ABV. Huge, huge wine, really is a blockbuster. Even concentrated than some big Aussie shirazes. Possibly a little over-extracted and overripe, but maintains such a great balance and a solid structure. A complex nose with black pepper, sage, stewed plums, grilled meat, liquorice. Also a hint of mint and coffee. Full bodied on the palate with dark fruits, spices, enormous concentration, but with a backbone of lovely firm tannins. Acidity is slightly lower, but good, and just feels natural and appropriate for a warm climate wine like this. Alcohol is completely hidden. Stunning wine, will last.
