Introduction
A small little tasting conducted by Pichon Baron courtesy of Straits Wines and Vintry showcasing the Les Tourelles and Tokajis under Pichon Baron
Flight 1 - Les Tourelles de Longueville - Second wine of Pichon Baron (2 notes)
Red
2006 Les Tourelles de Longueville
8/10 - Like the 2005, the wine has a significant proportion of merlot, is very different in style from the first wine and is more accessible than its cabernet heavy cousins. The 2006, however, lacks the floral aspect of the 2005 and with somewhat more chewy tannins. While slightly lacking compared to its company, its still a good wine and I give it the same score as the 2005.
Red
2005 Les Tourelles de Longueville
8/10 - A pretty unique Pauillac wine given the significant proportion of merlot and very different in style from the first wine. Much more accessible than its cabernet heavy cousins. Wonderfully floral aroma with raspberry and spices. Round and plush on the palate, yet with gravel and hints of graphite. Tannins are silky, acidity matches will and finish is long. Good bang for buck wine, especially within the appellation. I preferred this to the 2006 with its greater complexity and enjoyable floral notes.
Flight 2 - Pichon Baron's Hungarian Tokajis (2 notes)
White - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Disznókő Tokaji Késöi Szüretelésü-Late Harvest
7/10 - No botrytis in this. Lots of peaches and dried apricot with honey. Acidity was fresh but could do with more. Relatively lower viscosity which added to the freshness. Mid-palate disappeared before the vanilla finish. Enjoyable, but paled in comparison to the other wines tonight. This was made even more obvious once the Puttonyos came around. As good as the wine was, it was let down by its mid palate.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2000 Disznókő Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos
8.5/10 - WOTN. Vibrantly dark gold with orange-red tinges. Creamy nose of white peach, dried apricots, dried figs, spices and dollops of honey. On the palate, this comes through as a lovingly warm viscous feel. I'm in two minds about the acidity. I would traditionally prefer a little bit more, but I can see why one would leave the richness untouched. Great smoky finish too. Not a first growth sauternes, but it's still complex and for what it does it does very very well.
