Flight 1 - Warm-up white (1 note)

White
2007 Van Volxem Saar Riesling Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
Light yellow color. Mouth watering aromas of white pears, lychee, white flowers, wet stones, stinging nettle and a bit of ammonium chloride. The taste matched the nose with freshness and a lively acidity. The wine appears dry, but with signs of some residual sugar. Lovely glass which took me back to Wiltingen, Saar last summer, where I tasted the wine with the producer Roman Niewodniczanski and immediately brought a case. The wine was more rewarding than I remember it, but no less delicious and amazing. It delivered great drinking pleasure and great value-for-money.

Flight 2 - Warm-up red (1 note)

Red
1994 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
94 points
Showing a bit of age with a slightly orange glow around the edges and a nicely developed aroma and taste of pure, cool and classic blackcurrant fruit, a bit hot and sweet. There are also notes of shoe polish, tobacco leaf, cedar and rust. The wine ends with a slightly bitter iron note which stands in contrast to the sweetness. But overall very beautiful and delicious. Perfectly mature now.

Flight 3 - Checking in on Northern Rhone 1999 (2 notes)

Red
1999 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
93 points
Black color with a red hue. Withdrawn, tight nose with cool black fruit, black cherries, blueberries and black olives, along with notes of campfire, oil barrel and iron-like minerals. Similar deep, cool blackness on the palate with black cherries and blueberries followed by smoky notes, blood, dried meat, olives and iron. Some bitter notes on the midpalate. Cool and restrained on the finish. Hard as nails, but the balance is impeccable, so it has to be a matter of time before this seriously shines.
Red
1999 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
97 points
Black color with a red hue. The full-throttle aromas jump out of the glass, great intensity and very inviting nose with notes of black, ripe fruit, cherries, black berries, creamy chocolate, licorice, coffee grinder, roasted oak, air-dried meats, olives, campfire and oil barrel. Wildly intense on the palate with layers of dark fruit, cherries and blackcurrant, but all cool, fresh and refined. There is also lots of sweet, roasted oak present on the midpalate and finish, together with an exciting broad spectrum of smoky meats, olives, oil barrel, campfire and gunpowder. Great, great length. Velvety texture, but lively, fresh acidity keeps you reaching for another sip.

Flight 4 - Beaucastel 1990 (1 note)

Red
1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
flawed
Dark red color with a browning hue. Cabbage, animal dung, orange peel and banana on the nose. Cooked and oxidized taste - clearly an off bottle.
