Porchetta Dinner & Burgundy at Bryan's

Tasted August 14, 2011 - August 15, 2011 by troutmonster with 410 views

Introduction

A small get together with some sommelier and in-the-biz friends got kind of silly last night, with some great bottles of wine. While we kicked things off with some great champagnes and rieslings, it was the Burgundy paired with Porchetta that really stole the spotlight. We didn't plan it but we managed to pop burgundies from each of the last 4 decades.

Flight 1 - Four Decades of Burgundy (4 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Bright nosed and very expressive, with ripe bing cherry and lilacs. Very fresh red fruit is vivid, with a silky tannin profile and acid that provides impressive lift. A wine that gives pleasure now but I'd imagine 10-15 years in the cellar will reward.
Red
1992 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
One of the most surprising wines I've ever tasted. From a washout vintage, this wine was "saved by the stems", as my friend Mike said. Asian spice and lilacs are fresh and confusingly youthful on the nose, with palate that has tasty dried cherry and rhubarb qualities. Impeccably stored and a testament that the best of winemakers can deal with tough vintages (or get lucky?).
Red
1988 Lucien Jayer Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
I'm told this is made by Lucien's legendary brother, Henri. Murky, unfiltered appearance with some bricking. Very spice driven and complex nose of tabasco sauce, bell pepper and mushrooms. Surprising tannin for a wine with this age, with a good core of dried cranberry and spice box carrying through. I wasn't totally in love with the wine, but it seemed to unfold pretty nicely and I most enjoyed the last couple of sips. That said, I don't see this improving with anymore time. Drink now.
Red
1978 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
WOTN. Bricking rim but this wine held up beautifully. Sous bois, beef stock and flowers are all there on a very savory nose. Fantastic middle weight texture, still showing some red fruit character but this wine is all about the savory style with an almost salty finish. Downright elegant and beautiful.
