Introduction

Standard Wine Ark tasting with three wineries - Moorooduc, Head Wines and Patrick of Coonawarra. New bloke presenting - Gavin Lennard. He seems to have forgotten to say every wine is perfect...

Flight 1 - Moorooduc Estate (5 notes)

Mornington Peninsular wine maker specialising in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Unfortunately they don't really work for me.

White
2009 Moorooduc Estate Chardonnay Robinson Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Nose: Stone fruit and citrus peel
Mouth: Stone fruit and apples, fresh acidity, clean but simple. If there is oak it is very discreet and I am not picking up any malolactic
White
2010 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Gris Garden Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Nose: Grape
Mouth: At the tasting my only comment is "utterly forgettable"
White
2009 Moorooduc Estate Chardonnay McIntyre Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Nose: butter, stone fruit, gooseberry, some oak and slight tropical fruit hints
Mouth: butter and oak dominate, also slightly acrid. Tastes over-engineered and lacks fruit.
Red
2009 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir Robinson Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Nose: Red fruit, smoke and spice
Mouth: burnt and smoky and bitter.
Red
2008 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir The Moorooduc McIntyre McIntyre Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Nose: Red fruit, berry and cherry, spice, cedar and oak
Mouth: red fruit, tart acidity, hints of menthol and bitter chalky & gritty tannin. Short finish

Flight 2 - Head Wines (5 notes)

Alex Head is now based in the Barossa where he buys in grapes and makes his own wine. I first met him when he was working at the Ultimo Wine Centre bottle shop. He is experimenting with stalks and whole bunch fermentation. All of the wines here are very young.

Rosé
2011 Head Wines Rosé Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Nose: Candied red fruit, candy floss and slight horse sweat
Mouth: Acidic and astringent
Red
2010 Head Wines Shiraz Head Red Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Nose: Perfumed peppercorns and apricots, medium plus intensity
Mouth: Jammy red & black fruit, alcohol heat on the back.
Hmm. Quite simple.
Red
2010 Head Wines Old Vine Grenache Greenock Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Nose: Red berry fruit and red currant, coffee, white pepper and slightly floral
Mouth: Jammy slightly burnt red fruit, medium finish and medium acidity.
Red
2010 Head Wines Syrah The Contrarian Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Nose: Perfumed green peppercorn and burnt jam and spice
Mouth: Talcy tannin, medium acid, meaty, olive, black fruit and black pepper and greenness - pyrazine.
Hmm again. Needs a bit more time I suspect but pleasant enough.
Red
2010 Head Wines The Blonde Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Nose: Tomato and olive, greenness, over black fruit and pepper, butter and vanilla
Mouth: slightly jammy black fruit, medium acid and mid mouth tannin that grips the front of the mouth.
Currently a bit dull and muted.

Flight 3 - Patrick of Coonawarra (5 notes)

I know nothing about Patrick of Coonawarra other than, rather obviously, they are from Coonawarra.

White
2010 Patrick Riesling Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Wrattonbully
Nose: Passion fruit, pineapple and lime
Mouth: tropical fruit, some residual sugar and medium minus acidity.
Very nice
White
2006 Patrick Riesling Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Wrattonbully
Nose: Kerosene and cream over some diminished tropical fruit
Mouth: medium minus acid and flat green apple.
Red
2008 Patrick Pinot Noir Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Mt. Gambier
Nose: Red fruit, earth, grass and, oddly, cream
Mouth: red cherry fruit, smoky/burnt, white pepper, residual sugar. Medium minus acid and tannin
Red
2006 Patrick Cabernet Sauvignon Home Block Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Nose: Mint, eucalypt, chocolate, over blackcurrant, cigar box and clove
Mouth: Slightly jammy black fruit, medium minus acid, medium tannin, slightly dry and astringent and slightly green.

Red
2002 Patrick Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Nose: Cream, vanilla, eucalypt, mint, coffee, chocolate and oak
Mouth: Blackcurrant, oak, bbq meat, medium acid, medium minus tannin.
Very smooth, very integrated and very balanced. Nice but is it $120 nice?

Closing

An okay tasting. Nothing really shone but I'd like to stick three bottles each of the Head Wine Contrarian and Blonde into the cellar to see how they age.
