Introduction

Vertical tasting of selected vintages of Chateau Palmer 1970 - 1983:

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Red
1970 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Attractive medium ruby/garnet in colour; slightly vegetal nose disappeared on swirling, and began to exhibit more cedar and deep fruit; initially somewhat reticcnt in showing its depth and concentration of fruit, but it opened up with more time; elegant and stylish; harmoniously structured with excellent sweet currant fruit; glides effortlessly over the palate, extending out to a long finish; fruit and spice continue, with still some tannins evident to assure longer life.
Red
1974 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From a less than successful vintage. This wine showed less depth of colour than the '70; promising nose of deep baked fruit and spices; somewhat dry on the palate, but some fruit showing, and finishing quite short. Still a remarkable showing for this wine.
Red
1975 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Very dark ruby colour, with just a glimpse of amber on the rim; full and penetrating aromas - warm berry fruit and some oak showing also; very full bodied and richly textured; sweet black currant fruit coats the inside of the mouth; softened up from my last tasting, but there remain considerable tannins; very long finish, with the fruit dominating and ending with the grip of the tannins. Much closer than previous tastings, but still some ways to go before this wine gets things in harmony. Enough fruit here to last.
Red
1976 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Medium full ruby in colour, with slight browning; attractive bouquet featuring berry fruit, some cedar and an element of floral fragrance; not a big wine on the palate, but elegant and smooth; good fruit and persistency; moderate finish, but very enticing. This wine was a total surprise, as I had earlier relegated the remaining bottles to my BBQ bins. It's now going to be resurrected for those occasions which call for an elegant red wine to accompany a veal dish.
Red
1979 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Rich ruby colour, with good depth; perfumy aromas of black currant fruit and dark hazelnut flavoured coffee; rich and full on the palate; mouthfilling creamy berry fruit coats the mouth - lasting impression, which extends out to a very long finish. Perhaps a little overdone, this wine is nevertheless very attractive. Still has some years ahead.
Red
1982 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Rich, full depth of purple toned ruby in colour; penetrating nose of clean berry and plum, with oak strains; fresh entry, but quite different from any of the other wines in this tasting - clean black currant and cherry fruit, with a freshly picked berry character; long and elegant; not quite what I expected from this wine, but it does finish attractively and the fruit dominates on the finish. Still some time left for this wine to fully evolve, but the acids and tannins harmoniously blend with the fruit.
Red
1983 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
A purple/ruby colour - very dark, probably the darkest colour of any of these wines; full blown aromas featuring dark berry fruit, some spice, sweet oak and an edge of chocolate; big and full on the palate, with enormous blackberry and black currant fruit; well knit structure, with fine acidity and still some considerable tannins in evidence; long, long finish where the fruit shows up front and the tannins follow through to the end. No idea when this wine will reach maturity, but there is still a massive concentration of fruit, and the tannins are not aggressive. Might be worth trying again in 4 or 5 years - still a baby after 20+ years, with plenty of promise here for the long pull.
