Inovasi - Lake Bluff IL

Flight 1 - Older Chambertin (4 notes)

Sad, sad flight. I was hoping two would show well, fairly certain at least one would show well, could barely imagine what happened. I wanted to pop-and-pour, but unfortunately the restaurant had some cork extraction problems so most needed to be decanted, exacerbating the problem. But this comes with the territory when opening old wine.

Dead.
Red
1970 Pierre Damoy Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Fill was 1 cm, color perfect. Bottle seemed adulturated.

Flight 2 - Older Leroy (2 notes)

I had expected to have a Rousseau 1988 in the flight but what I thought were my two bottles of that wine both were actually Beze.

Red
1986 Maison Leroy Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Red and black fruit on nose, more fruit than earth-driven, with some background spice. Palate seems more black cherry, also quite young with good spice but not quite the weight or density I'd hope to see. An interesting bottle in the context of the entire dinner because as one of the last vintages of Maison Leroy Chambertin, this was supposedly sourced from Bernard Dugat, whose vines were subsequently used for Dugat-Py Chambertin, with his 2000 and 2001 vintages also served tonight.

Tasted single blind alongside Maison Leroy 1988. Black fruit on nose with some meaty spice and fresh herb aromas. Very concentrated fruit on palate with just hints of emerging secondary development. Flavors emphasize powerful, meaty, dense characteristics, rather than spice or nuance. Still this gets by nicely on brawn.

Flight 3 - 1995 (3 notes)

Slightly disappointing flight. I thought 95s would show better, but the vintage's negative stereotype came through too prominently.

1995 Domaine Leroy Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. Great nose of black fruit, lots of spice (not necessarily identifiable as Gevrey-type spice) with a good floral/perfumed Leroy element. Same black fruit on palate, somewhat less spice, but also lots of tannins and acidity that were quite prominent and in the forefront. If I had another bottle, i would put this away for another 10-20 years and see if magic happens.

1995 Domaine Trapet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. Dark, intense fruit on nose with pepper, licorice and clearly emerging earthy aromas. Same black fruit on palate along with mushroom flavors, with somewhat less spice than on the nose. Lots and lots of acidity keeping the fruit from providing as much enjoyment as I would hope. Give this another decade.

1995 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. Red and black cherry on nose with anise, cloves and some oak spice. More black fruit on palate with lots of tannins and minerality, then even more acidity. Earthy flavors just starting to emerge, but mostly primary. Great energy gives this a long finish, but not necessarily as powerful, lush or spice-driven as I'd expect from Rousseau Chambertin. Give this another decade or more before revisiting.

Flight 4 - 2000 (3 notes)

Red
2000 Domaine Leroy Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted single blind alongside 2000 Chambertin from Dugat-Py and Rousseau. Perfumed with sensational sweet spice on the nose, this is a wine you can swirl and smell all night. Big black fruit on the palate with lots of meaty spice. Great minerality, acidity and tannins, all of which are subtly powerful and help contribute to layers of flavor and sensational texture. Very long evolving finish. Almost everybody's Wine of the Night. Perhaps so far my Wine of the Year?

Tasted single blind. First time I have ever tasted Dugat-Py Chambertin. Poured alongside its vintage contemporaries from Leroy and Rousseau, it was comically easy to tell which was which - you could smell the Leroy immediately once poured, and this Dugat-Py was one of the darkest colored red Burgundies I have ever seen. Obviously served in a great flight, but frankly my least favorite. Black fruit throughout, not particularly forthcoming despite several hours in a decanter. Spice started to assert itself from middle through finish, but still overwhelmed by the wine's tannins. Didn't really evolve or improve in an hour+ in glass. For me it is unclear exactly how this wine will develop...but again, this was my first ever Dugat-Py Chambertin.

Tasted single blind. Slightly lost alongside Leroy's and Dugat-Py's 2000 Chambertin, both of which were more lush and/or powerful. Blackberry and black cherry aromas with background floral elements. Palate had same fruit with moderate intensity, good minerality.

Flight 5 - 2001 (3 notes)

2001 Domaine Denis Mortet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. Aromas of blackberry and black cherry and red cherry with dark, brooding spice in background. Massive fruit on palate with some candied character to them, as well as a trace of cassis. Powerful and elegant at the same time, this wine is already showing incredible balance. This was my only bottle so I will try to find another to try again some time in what I expect to be this wine's drinking window of now-2031. Open and decanted a couple of hours before serving.

2001 Bernard Dugat-Py Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. Massive in every way. Black cherry, blackberry with lots of oak spice on nose. Same fruit profile on the palate with anise and cloves. Lots of tannin, good acidity and minerality, this isn't yet close to its peak, despite having spent several hours in a decanter. Every aspect of this is big and powerful, if not necessarily elegant or charming.

Tasted single blind. Red and black cherry on nose with anise, cloves and some floral notes in background. Same fruit on palate with a slightly candied character to it. Noticeable oak on nose and palate.
