Flight 1 (10 notes)

White - Sparkling
1982 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
Big, lush and powerful fruit showing obvious Pinot Noir character and strength. Just starting to fade, based on my Champagne preference for a more fresh, crisp style.
White
1991 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
At a very good place right now with a good amount of fruit and some hints of earthiness, some remaining floral elements, then lots of structure providing a long finish.
White
2002 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Fresh peaches and cream on the nose with mint and hazelnut in background. Long, dense and powerful fruit on palate, great minerality and acidity come through in middle and finish, everything in perfect balance.
Red
1998 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Black and red cherry on nose, not nearly as perfumed as I recall from several previous times with this same wine. Lush and big cherry flavors on the palate with good length and textures, but it somehow seemed to be getting a little dried out. I'm thinking this was a less-than-perfect bottle, but still very enjoyable.
Red
1988 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
93 points
Red and black cherry on nose with some emerging forest floor notes. Palate was surprisingly elegant and ethereal for the vintage, showing light and charming red and black cherry flavors and just traces of the notorious 1988 massive tannin and structure. Really at a great place right now.
Red
1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
93 points
Black fruit on nose with espresso, fresh herbs and meaty spice. Sweet black cherry and plum on palate with great structural support through to big finish. Drinking beautifully now, but this is still a baby and I'd expect it to reach its peak drinking window closer to 2020.
Red
1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
95 points
Black fruit with incredible spice on the nose, showing allspice, cinnamon and fresh thyme. Powerful fruit just explodes out of the glass with incredible concentration and density, but completely harmonious. Lots of new oak, tannins and acidity, but everything is in great balance. Truly sensational example of a great Clos St.-Jacques.
Red
2000 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Blackberry and black cherry on nose showing a very ripe, even roasted character. Same big lush fruit on palate, certainly accompanies by a fair share of new oak spice, with lots of fruit concentration and density. Great job for the vintage, but probably not my preferred style of Grand Cru Burgundy.
Red
2006 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
After a fair amount of time in a decanter, this was surprisingly accessible tonight. Red cherry and raspberry on nose with fresh herbs, then slightly darker cherry flavors on the palate. Structure is firm but not overwhelming with lots of power behind. I imagine this is more typically shut down but the decanting really helped.
Red
1961 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Big and powerful from the start with black fruit, espresso, roasted meat aromas and flavors. Tannins were still a hint too obtrusive and forward for everything else left in the wine.
