Introduction
Wines are tasted double blind in flights, which are arranged randomly, but as much as possible from light to heavy. Each flight is discussed & unveiled before moving on to the next flight.
Flight 1 - Warm up whites (4 notes)
Blind warm ups provided by our hosts. The first two were rather odd, not quite my cup of tea, but we recovered nicely with the Sbragia and Luca which was particularly enjoyable.
White
N.V. Bodegas Bianchi New Age
Argentina, Mendoza, San Rafael
Notes of acetone and beeswax; has a mineral note too. Flavors of apple and pear; honeyed; effervescent. Develops a plastic quality. Possibly flawed, possibly just really damn weird. No guess as to what this was.
White
2009 Sbragia Family Sauvignon Blanc Home Ranch
USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
Initial aroma of cat urine, followed by citrus and a very subtle grassy note. Good balance and fruit on the palate; finishes nicely. Acid is bright, grapefruit tones dominate. Sauv Blanc. 88-89 pts.
White
2008 Luca Chardonnay
Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco
Deep color with aromas of pear, toast and apple; hints of vanilla. Rich, full texture with flavors of toast, vanilla, tropical fruit and pear. Long finish. Very nice Chard. I believe all of us thought domestic.
Flight 2 - Reds (6 notes)
Red
1996 Château Lanessan
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Faded garnet core, bricking at the meniscus. Initial notes of forest floor, underbrush, tobacco and iron with flavors of red currants and berries. Unfortunately, everything fades rather quickly in the glass, just suddenly seems stripped of all aromas and flavors. Domino noted a very subtle corkiness; yes, that explains what happened to the fruit. Ever so mildly corked.
Red
1996 Château Cantemerle
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Garnet core with some bricking. Aromas of red currants, underbrush, tobacco and iron. Balanced, tannins have integrated; flavors of plum and red berries, iron and spice box. Decent finish, if a bit on the short side. 88+ pts.
Red
1996 Château Cantemerle Les Allées de Cantemerle
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Garnet core with some bricking. Aromas of red fruit, ripe currants, tobacco and underbrush turning to dark fruit. Balanced, with lovely red fruit, spice box and forest floor flavors. Nice finish. 89+ pts.
I believe everyone guessed Bordeaux double blind, and most felt the Allees was showing better than its companion wine today. An impressive effort from this bottle.
Red
1999 Novy Family Wines Syrah Napa Valley
USA, California, Napa Valley
Lovely aromas of dark fruit, iron, raspberry, vanilla and tobacco. Balanced, with black fruit and vanilla flavors on the palate. I guessed Cabernet.
Red
2001 Ridge Geyserville
USA, California, Sonoma County
Crimson color with notes of spicy red fruit- a touch ripe & pruny; also some chocolate qualities. Flavors of red fruit, spice and white pepper; perhaps a bit "hot" too. First thought was a Grenache-based blend. Develops a brambly quality in the glass; also some raspberry notes. Settled on Zin.
Red
2008 Desert Wind Vineyard RUAH
USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Wahluke Slope
Opaque inky crimson color. Aromas of spice, vanilla, white pepper and a mix of red and dark fruits. Balanced; flavors of vanilla, coffee and black fruit. Guessed Spanish.
Flight 3 - Reds (6 notes)
Red
2001 Ridge Lytton Springs
USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
Garnet color. Spicy red fruit, plum, dark fruit and vanilla notes. Balanced; dark fruit and vanilla flavors, has a harshness on the finish.
Red
2001 Turley Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard
USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Soft ruby color. Aromas of cherries, raspberry and pepper; bright red fruit notes. Flavors of red berries, perhaps some cherry too; a bit acidic. Guessed Italian. In a double blind tasting these bottles stand out - so those of us with Turley in the group usually change out the bottles. Rich went reverse psychology on us and didn't switch bottles.
Red
1999 Van Duzer Pinot Noir Barrel Select Estate
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Soft ruby color - lightest wine in this flight. Cherry and rhubarb aromas with a nice earthy undertone. Well-balanced, with lovely cherry and red fruit qualities. Elegant. Pretty easy to pick out as Pinot, though I did not think it was from Oregon. 89-90 pts.
Red
2006 Mietz Cellars Petit Verdot
USA, California, Sonoma County
Opaque inky red color. Reticent, some dark fruit notes, but not much else. Full-bodied and nicely balanced- tannins are firm, but slightly sweet, and there's loads of deep black fruit washing across the palate. I'd rate this higher if there was any kind of bouquet, so it goes to show just how pure and enjoyable the fruit on the palate is. No guess on varietal - defaulted to Cabernet. So rare to taste a 75%+ PV, there's not many who'll pick one out double blind.
Flight 4 - Nonblind dinner wines (2 notes)
For dinner, Mike & LA made calzones with assorted fillings, which were very good. Sue provided the L'Ecole, which is drinking rather well right now. We provided the Girard which is has always been a consistently enjoyable PS for the price. These wines were served nonblind with dinner.
Red
2003 Girard Winery Petite Sirah
USA, California, Napa Valley
Dark inky red color. Aromas of blackberry and dark fruit with meaty undertones. Tannins are integrating nicely; blackberry and dark fruit flavors dominant. Long finish.
Closing
Thanks to Mike & LA for hosting and for dinner, we look forward to seeing everyone again next month.
