Introduction

Another great offline with great company and great wines. Notes organized in drinking order.

Flight 1 - White & Rosato (2 notes)

White
2001 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile France, Alsace
Medium dark gold color. Aromatics of orange peel, sugar, peach and hints of apple on the nose, almost suggestive of a sweet wine though it's completely dry. Smooth, slightly oily mouthfeel, medium high acidity and tons of mineralogy on the finish. Nice stuff.
Rosé
2000 R. López de Heredia Rioja Rosado Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
American oak is very noticeable on the nose, particularly after it has a chance to open up in the glass. Notes of coconut, caramel, citrus, florals, and scotch with a subtle savory undertone. Light to medium body. High acidity and a medium long finish. Most polarizing wine in the tasting line up.

Flight 2 - Served Blind (1 note)

Red
2006 Rainoldi Sforzato di Valtellina Sfursat Fruttaio Ca' Rizzieri Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Sforzato di Valtellina
Served blind. Translucent medium intensity ruby color. Red fruit on the nose with a curious note of tomato and just a hint of vinegar. Up front red fruit on the palate with a touch of sweetness. Medium body with serious structure. High levels of drying tannin and high acidity.

Flight 3 - Mixed Reds (8 notes)

Red
2007 Holdredge Pinot Noir Selection Massale USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Medium intensity ruby color. Ripe upfront fruit with tons of black cherry on the nose. The fruit is slightly candied on the palate. Smooth mouthfeel. Medium to medium full bodied with medium acid, low to medium tannin and a medium length finish.
Red
2008 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Medium translucent ruby. Notes of white pepper, red fruit and herbs on the nose. Ripe red fruit on the palate mixed with florals and forest floor. Elegant with light to medium body, medium high to high acidity, and a medium long finish. Very nice wine.
Red
2006 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Oak and sweet cherry syrup on the nose. Similar notes on the palate. Full-bodied with low tannin and acid.
Red
2001 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Medium intensity garnet color. Red fruit, tar, forest floor and hints of spice on the nose. Similar on the palate with floral notes and sour cherry. High acidity and tannin. Long finish. Very nice classic Barolo. I saved some in my glass to revisit and it just got better with some air.
Red
2003 Chappellet Cabernet Franc USA, California, Napa Valley
Dark fruit, blueberry, vanilla and oak notes on the nose. Ripe, round fruit on the palate. Full-bodied with medium acid, medium high tannin, and a long finish.
Red
2005 Seven Stones Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
Dark colorin the glass. Ripe and lush aromatics of black cherry, eucalyptus, charcoal and toasted oak. Similar notes on the palate. Round and full-bodied with medium high tannin and acid. Long finish. I saved some in a glass and revisited towards the end of the evening and noticed that the mouthfeel smoothed out after some time in the glass.
Red
2004 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature USA, California, Napa Valley
Dark color. Red and blue fruit on the palate with black coffee and spicy oak on the nose. Similar notes on the palate. Medium to medium hi tannin, medium acidity, and a medium long finish.
Red
2003 Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
Ripe blue and brambly fruit with toasted oak on the nose. Slightly spicy. Smooth mouthfeel with medium tannin and medium low acid.

Flight 4 - Dessert Interlude (1 note)

We figured we would drink this one when they served dessert, even though we still had more reds on the table.

Red - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Breaux Vineyards Nebbiolo Ice Wine USA, Virginia, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County
Served with dessert. Tons of apple and stone fruit on the nose. Similar on the palate with some sweet red fruit as well. Medium acid. Viscous mouthfeel.

Flight 5 - Back to Reds (2 notes)

Red
2004 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Tight at first but it does open up very nicely in the glass. Medium dark color. Red cherry, leather and savory soy sauce on the nose. Similar notes on the palate with high tannin and acid. Nice stuff. I had it along with three other wines in front of me and I kept going back to it.
Red
2008 La Sirena Pirate TreasuRed USA, California, Napa Valley
Impenetrabley dark color. Candied cherry cough syrup on the nose, coated in vanilla. Same on the palate with low tannin and acid. Short finished with a sort of underlying bitterness that I sometimes notice on wines made from overripe fruit. A bit of a mess.
