Introduction

We stoutly resisted the beer commercials and instead had the following libations during today's football extravaganza.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. J. Lassalle Champagne Premier Cru Brut Chigny-lès-Roses France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Medium weight wine with some citrus. Very fresh, perceptible dosage, well balanced with some end minerality. Really nice NV Champagne.
White
2000 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Medium yellow. Truffled honey scents right out of the chute, then these receded to the background somewhat to reveal more youthful sea breeze and iodine notes. Medium weight, great texture, resolved acidity, great length. Terrific, fully mature Chablis.
White
2000 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Same color as the Dauvissat Forest. Fresher, brighter nose with equal measures of lemon and salinity. Pure, light weight. The tart citrus is reprised on the palate with both a sense of ripeness and excellent finishing stoniness. Sleek and lovely, all it is missing is a bit of cut and intensity to elevate it to the next level. A model of delicacy, though, and this bottle is incredibly young. Unlike the Dauvissat, which showed truffle early on, this displayed some Raveneau hazelnut and waxiness only with some air. I must say that it continued to grow and impress over time.
Red
2009 Georges Descombes Morgon Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Opened 4 hours before tasting. Medium ruby. Wonderful cinnamon spiciness and cherries. Basically light with that extra layer of 2009 flesh. Proper twist of cranberry acidity, no sense of overextraction or overripeness. I was delighted to track down a bottle of this after being so impressed with it in Paris last fall. Beautifully balanced and should prove to be a great example from this extraordinary Beaujolais vintage.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2002 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Medium yellow. Interesting interplay of quince and lemon on both the nose and palate. Medium weight, crystalline and pure due to its great acidity, off dry rather than sweet and definitely not botrytized. This has miles to go but is not as forebodingly backward as a bottle I had almost 2 years ago. Truly excellent.
