Flight 1 (1 note)

Red
2000 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
87 points
Decanted. Very pretty mature Cabernet nose, graphite, dried leaves, mature cassis fruit integrated with wood spice. Minimal tobacco-edged red fruit, more herbal and tea character, nice mouthfeel but palate lacks the depth of a better vintage.

Flight 2 (1 note)

Red
2007 Bisceglia Aglianico del Vulture Terra di Vulcano Italy, Basilicata, Aglianico del Vulture
88 points
Similar to previous bottle, though this (fortunately) showed less oxidized character. Mulled black cherry nose, sweet plum, rustic/earth flares. The best aspect of this wine is its smooth, silky mouthfeel, only a medium-bodied wine but coats the palate with sweet, dark orange/red to black fruits, sweet tobacco, tart plum, bright finish. 88+

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
2008 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna Australia, South Australia
90 points
Decanted 8 hours. Dark purple-black. Extremely primary, black licorice, jammy blackberry, acetone, faint herbal background. Heat brings it a bit out of balance. Primary palate, black and blueberry, ripe plum, tea leaf, with a relatively clipped finish. Very young, but doubtful this will ever rival the exceptional 2006.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
2008 Feudo Maccari Nero d'Avola Saia Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
89 points
Opened an hour in advance but not decanted. Pours transparent red. This could pass for a Cotes du Rhone or similar Southern Rhone. Gives off hot-grown fruit, very red, wild cherry and red berry, stony mineral, leathery, dry mountain herbs. Not a big wine. Enjoyable, but too simple for $28.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
2003 Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
85 points
Very herbal nose, with tobacco, red cherry, a drop of cream, and dusty spice. Angular, high acid palate, rawhide, pomegranate, basic red cherry.

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
2004 Bear Creek Winery (Oregon) Claret USA, Oregon, Southern Oregon
83 points
30% Cabernet Sauvignon Edgevale, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon Siskiyou, 40% Merlot Edgevale. Lots of cream on the nose nose, some vague floral nuances, toasted wood, but really just tons of cream. Not much fruit left on the palate, mature currants that have developed a dried prune character, open midpalate, watery-astringent finish. This bottle is showing more age than the last couple bottles.
