Introduction

The Washington Tasters Guild held a Nuits St. Georges dinner on a windy Thursday night in DC. The event was held at Brasserie Beck, and the food was quite well paired with the wine. In general, the wines were open for several hours but not decanted.

Flight 1 - First Flight (2 notes)

Paired with Peekytoe Crab, Cauliflower Panna Cotta, Shaved Cauliflower, Celery & Rasins

White
2005 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
From Magnum. Pale gold color, grapefruit nose, fat golden fruit, a bit light on acid, wood on the farily long finish.
White
2005 Domaine de Montille Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Lighter color compared to the Clos d'Arlot, more retiscent nose but with coaxing some butter, floral notes. Oak, subdued citrus fruit, round palate, good acid. Wood on the slightly clipped finish

Flight 2 - Second Flight (3 notes)

Paired with Roasted Squab, Farro, Persillade, and Cherry Jus

Red
2006 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Light translucent red, bing cherry, sous bois, reduction. Not giving up much fruit on the palate, medium-light mouth feel, fairly balanced, some detectable heat and roasted red fruit on medium finish.
Red
2006 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Slightly darker than the Bousselots and Pruliers, earthy, spicy, anise nose. Darker fruit, more accessible as well, linear on the palate with not much going on. Slightly clipped finish that improved with air. Let this one breathe for 30-45 minutes.
Red
2006 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Light color similar to the Bousselots, ripe candied bing cherry, strawberry. Juicy, acid, fine yet accessible tannin, good long- finish. The best of the flight in terms of current drinking.

Flight 3 - Third Flight (3 notes)

Paired with Duck Pain d'epices Puree, Herb Roasted Apricots, Spinach, Duck Jus

Red
2006 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Lightest color of the Arlot flight. Bretty nose, pine needles. Tart red fruit, light bodied. Smooth medium finish with manageable tannin.
Red
2006 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Darker color than the Clos d'Arlot. Elegant nose, floral and balanced. Broad midpalate with lush fruit, medium acidity. Medium + finish with manageable dark tannin. A real step up from the Clos d'Arlot.
Red
2005 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
In a different league compared to the 06. Darker color, shape shifting nose, tar, pine needle resin, forest floor. Sappy dark fruit, mid palate tight, balanced. Substantial drying tannin with med+ finish. Shows tremendous promise.

Flight 4 - Fourth Flight (3 notes)

Paired with Epoisses (too strong for the wine, the entire table needed a palate cleanse after the cheese)

Red
2005 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Dark color, semi translucent. Brett, fresh cut grass, some heat. Red fruit obscured by tannin, medium short finish. That said, seemed to improve significantly with air, so recommend a longer decant.
Red
2005 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Darker color. Toast, candied bing cherry, forrest. Sappy red fruit, somewhat light on midpalate with average acidity, long tannic finish. Shows promise but did not show particularly well on this night, slightly out of balance on the back end.
Red
2005 Domaine de Montille Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Slightly lighter color. Mint, pine tar, candied tart cherry. Smooth, linear, medium acidity, most pure fruit of the night. Medium-long finish with fine drying tannin.

Closing

My takeaway was that 2005 is a great, powerful vintage in NSG, and 2006 is a good if not particularly interesting vintage that will drink a few years earlier than '05. All these wines showed young and need several more years of bottle age to yield maximum pleasure.
