Introduction

A group of 4 of us had the pleasure of having Chef Michael Carlson craft a special 14 course menu for us in exchange for bringing him one single half pound white truffle from Italy. It was an incredible evening of food, wine, and conversation.

Some of the other wines included, though I didn't take detailed notes on included:
1988 Pol Roger Winston Churchill
1996 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues Batard Montrachet
1996 Giacosa Barolo Falletto
1999 Giacosa Barolo Falletto
1996 Gaja Spress
1998 Gaja Spress

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
1999 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Ripe, creamy lemon and lemon peel on the nose with white floral and crushed stone as well. The palate has fattened up some since the last time I had it, but the mineral backbone is still there. Some pretty spice notes. Medium bodied. Moderate acidity on the medium plus finish.
Red
1998 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
White Truffle Dinner at Schwa. Popped and poured alongside the 98 Meo Richebourg. Amazing, powerful aromatics right from the start. Much more than the Richebourg. Spicy, darker red berry fruit with quite a bit of brown spice going on. Notes of crushed stone too. Red berry fruit again on the palate with spice hitting everywhere in the mouth. Great balance of fruit, acidity, and minerality. Medium weight with a very long finish. Still has great grip.
Red
1998 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
White Truffle Dinner at Schwa. Popped and poured alongside the 98 Meo Cros Parantoux. Dark red fruit and brown spice peeked out, but started overall very closed. The Cros Parantoux was much more ready to go. After about an hour or so, the wine really began to unfold and show layers and layers of fruit and spice. Powerful dark red berry and cherry with touches of blue/black berry fruit too. Loads of clove and nutmeg and some darker floral elements. You can still sense the wood being there, but it is not intrusive. Expansive on the palate, but still showing some restraint; I'd love to try again in another 5 or so years. Medium to medium plus body with a long gripping finish.
Red
1998 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
White Truffle Dinner at Schwa. Popped and poured. Powerful black cherry and berry on the nose with great spice and iron notes. Dark floral too. Ripe dark cherry and berry on the palate, yet it still had a firmess to it. Great mineral backbone. Notes of clove on both the nose and palate as well. Medium plus bodied with a gripping, powerful finish. I would let these age a few more years before trying again.
Red
1990 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
White Truffle Dinner at Schwa. Popped and poured. Highly aromatic and powerful nose of ripe dark red and black berry fruits, dark spice and wet earth tones. Powerful fruit on the palate too and great spice throughout. Medium plus body. Great acidity on the long finish. Great wine!
Red
1990 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Opened an hour before consuming, but not decanted. Powerful, highly aromatic nose of dark red/black cherry, berry, and cassis with grilled meat and blood notes along with black pepper, damp earth and leather. Ripe and forward on the full bodied palate with great acidity and a long finish. Tannins have integrated quite well, but should still have a long life ahead. Much better than the last bottle I had of this, which was from the same case.
