Introduction

The title is one that Ray should explain :)

It was a pleasure to see Doug, Reme, Ray and Fran, and Bob.. nothing like a quite evening with some excellent wines and even better company. the food was simple - but that just let the wines speak louder. and did they ever! Thanks guys for a lovely start of the weekend!

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2004 Bodegas Angel Rodriguez Verdejo Rueda Martínsancho Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda
87 points
ripe, apricots, green grass hiding behind the fruit, red currants? the middle is leaner but without the laser acidity that the better ones have. bit flabby. apples and peasr dominate over the citrus but a nice lemony tart finish. good QPR

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
2001 Château La Confession France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

This opened up slowly and i would decant ahead if possible.
Rich plum, pencil and lactic nose. 40% merlot 40 Cab Franc and 20 Cab Sav... yet Cab Sav seems to be the strongest now. spicy oak, vanilla. but at the same time this is not sweet or overpowering wine. this has great balancing and refreshing acidity and with a few more years will surelly develop that BDX touch. Great job and a QPR
Red
2000 Artadi Rioja Pagos Viejos Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
93 points
sweaty. VERY closed on opening...and even after an hour . this needs to be lost for a few. excellent balance, with time the wine fills out, the tannins and backbone start showing ripe rich fruit, the finish is just sumlive with black berry tartness..like biting into a bunch of blackberries or blueberries.. this will be a sublime wine in time. talthough modern it is by no means a wine without place. it is a true rioja.
Red
2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
How is this avaliable for $49 at PC? this is one of the BEST young CDP i have ever had. still a baby and needs time - but this wine is VERY VERY VERY good. the nose alone - meaty pungent sweaty, iodine? burnt caramel? .... in the mouth, rich and silky at the same time. fresh streak of acidity right through the middle, amazing finish and sweet tannins.. YEEHA!

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Off-dry

light and unevolved color. excelent cork - an accident? :)
petrol nose with peach and apricot (clean botrytis throughout) tropical fruit (guava?) this is semi sweet but with angel-food cake thats not overly sweet it wors really well. complex middle with red berries and apples. honey notes thoughtout, long finish. just lovely .
