Very primary, but shows loads of red and black fruits, nice weight, and good purity. Tannin is well-concealed. Shows good promise for the next few years.

1999 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

After the first pour showed too much barnyard, gave it a quick double decant and a couple minute timeout. Wow, did that help--thereafter the whole cascade of CdP scents began, black fruits, smoked herbs, pine, pepper, etc. Powerful and rich, it seemed to have more there than many of the 1999s I've had. Compared with the 2000 Clos des Papes, this showed much more braggadocio. Didn't really open up more over the night, but remained a great bottle of wine.

2000 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

From a 375ml bottle, double decanted for 4 hours. More evolved than the 750ml which I had a year ago. Beautiful, seductive nose, showing lots of secondary characteristics, including truffles and cigar tobacco. Danced on the palate with lightness, but backed by great power. Perfect complement for the Provencal lamb. Compared with the 1999 Vieux Donjon, this was more aristocratic and much more interesting and complex.
