Introduction

A wine pages off-line to explore the wines of Lignier, the centrepiece of which was an eight-vintage vertical of the Faconnières which I have been following for the past seven years. I was pleased to see that my faith was not misplaced, and these wines were consistently gorgeous and, for all their glossiness, wines of real substance. There were three grand crus too, the Clos de la Roche from 07 and 06 and the Clos St Denis, but I'm ashamed to say that I was so inebriated by the time they came round that I've no real recollection of what they were like, though I have managed to decipher a few words I wrote on the CSD.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Picard Champagne Brut Sélection France, Champagne
88 points
Fresh, tangy, lost of zest, very moreish

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
1999 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
89 points
Some sap, bright red fruits, cherries, a few stalks, good depth, lovely
Red
1999 Virgile Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Pretty much the same as the Domaine labelled version, perhaps a bit fuller and riper, and there's a hint of sweat that the other doesn't seem to have. Equally attractive.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
92 points
Heady, spicy red fruited nose, oaky, voluptuous, gorgeous
Red
2008 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
92 points
Darker, tighter, sharper than the 09. As well as the gloss, there's something meaty there, animal, rasping acidity. Super
Red
2007 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
90 points
Ripe and lush, oaky but fresh, exotic spices, liqueur cherry, maybe some jamminess, but nevertheless, very attractive
Red
2006 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
91 points
Approachable, and this too is glossy and red fruited, some development. Lovely.

Flight 4 (4 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
91 points
Massive, but clearly not closed, ripe, intriguing, more to come
Red
2004 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
90 points
A touch of pepper, but ripe and soft textured, and the 04 tone comes as a streak of attractive freshness, deep, attractive
Red
2003 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
[Label says 2003, but cork says 2002. Given it tastes identical to the 2002 and given I didn't buy any 03, I think we can safely conclude that this was an 02 - see the02 note for how it tasted]
Red
2002 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
93 points
Ah, there's still that clove smoke nose, and it's so fresh, now more multi-layered and a tad softer textured, but still ravishingly red fruited.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
2000 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
This stood up well after the Faconnières. A bit lighter and fresher, showing very nicely

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
2006 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Berried, some oak, some char very fine
