Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
1990 Joseph Drouhin Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
96 points
Had as part of France/Australia/NZ Pinot Noir tasting dinner. It had the most on the nose of the first flight, and was clearly the French wine. Still has lots of life (especially for a 20 yr old Pinot). Very savoury, leathery, gamey. Revealed rich bacon-fat on the nose after time in glass. Awesome nose after 1hr in glass.
Red
2002 Felton Road Pinot Noir Central Otago New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
91 points
A bit muted on the nose. Silky. More vibrant and acidic than the Mount Mary. Slightly sharp and light. Quite fresh, but hasn't developed any aged complexity. In contrast to the Ata Rangi, feels like it would be more enjoyable in its youth.
Red
2000 Mount Mary Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
95 points
Earthy, complex nose. Sumptuous, yummy, earthy palate. Very complex. Great length. Beautiful Pinot! Much closer to Burgundy than Central Otago. Disappeared from the glass quickly because I couldn't stop drinking it.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
2007 Bass Phillip Pinot Noir Estate Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
94 points
Dusty nose. Mushroomy. Quite acidic. Very interesting wine. Earthy. Developed "bacon-fat" nose after time in glass. Gained complexity with time in glass. Very, very good! Best value wine in tasting. (94 Excellent wine)
Red
2005 Maison Leroy Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
flawed
Smelt ok (actually had some similarity to the Drouhin). Very short, light and acidic. Sharp and tangy - either a poorly made or flawed wine. 90% sure it was slightly oxidised (capsule was perfectly clean but cork had red seapage all the way through the cork) - For the sake of Leroy I hope the wine was flawed, otherwise it was terrible value.
Red
2008 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
92 points
Almost candied fruity nose, a bit of cinnamon showing through later. Young fruity luscious palate. Good weight and tannins. Needs time in bottle. Juicy -> got better (and more complex) with time in glass. Overall: quite rich - want to taste after a few years in bottle before judging. (92 Very good wine)

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine A Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania, Coal River
92 points
Good complex, but slightly subdued nose (very slight bacon-fat after time in glass). Delicious, mushroomy, meaty. More complex, elegant and subtle than Villa Maria, but also less powerful. (92 Very good wine)
Red
2007 Villa Maria Pinot Noir Cellar Selection New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
91 points
Subtle oak. Middle of the road Pinot. Solid, good value. Actually quite a distinctly Marlborough on the nose (could easily pick it from others in blind smelling).
