Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
1990 Il Poggiolo (Cosimi) Brunello di Montalcino Podere Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Weird cheese, soap, pine, iron, dried blood nose. Dilute, surprisingly tannic, acidic palate with virtually no fruit left, revealing a metallic element reminiscent of sucking on pennies. Pretty tired.
Red
1991 Tenuta Friggiali Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
Beautiful nose of dried flowers, resin, baking spice, burnt cherry skin. Sour cherry, cranberry, cedar on the palate paired with bright acidity makes this a classic old Sangiovese.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
1991 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Sappy, pine resin, spicy cherry, autumn leaves, whiff of cigar smoke on the nose. Intense acidity, cedar, tobacco palate with nice development. Very nice.
Red
1995 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
Incense, medicinal cherry, burnt orange, and french oak on the nose. Rich, deep, leather, plum & chocolate palate. Lots of fruit and stuffing, if a bit simple.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
Strawberry, cherry, almond, plum, iron, resin nose. Tart plum, incense, mineral, oak, succulent palate with intense spice and power. Modern, but quite enjoyable.
Red
2000 Sesti (Castello di Argiano) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Smoky plum, cocoa powder, powdered incense, montmorency cherry, grilled meat, spiky aromatics. Deeply spicy, pie cherry palate with a little stewy tomato element too. This was classic, restrained, and drinking really well. Very nice.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2005 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Plum, cooked cherries, cocoa, fresh marijuana. Tons of fruit held together by a fresh green streak. Concentrated and structured palate with nice acidity, resin, and incense. Maybe not the most classic Brunello but very fun to drink.
Red
2005 Vitanza Brunello di Montalcino Tradizione Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
86 points
Vanilla, cherry, cream soda, wood, christmas spice. Modern and not particularly interesting.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2006 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
78 points
Chocolate, vanilla, nestle quik, cherry cordials, plum. This is plump, sweet, very internationally styled, and shows tons of raw French oak in an unappealing way. If you only like fat Cali Cabs and want to drink something Italian, try this. Yuck.
Red
2006 Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Stinky, vaguely sulfury, green, burnt chemical nose. Awkward, showing some stemminess and oak alongside fresh pine and very dense tannin. No idea what to make of this, but it isn't very enjoyable now.
