White
1994 Schloss Schönborn Johannisberger Klaus Riesling Kabinett Germany, Rheingau
Really nice nose with musky notes and honey bee wax. Petrol. High acid but quite simple on the palate with not much going on. There's a touch of RS but this is on the dry side. Interesting Corinth raisin note (once you put them in water). on the finish.
Overall a pleasant wine but you would expect a little more complexity. Still nice to drink.
White - Off-dry
2010 Selbach-Oster Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
At first, the nose was almost a little Sauternes-ish is terms of richness and aromatics with a lot of exotic fruits, apricot and pineapple. Thick texture but rather balanced. The acidity is kicking back nicely on the finish.
Not a bad wine but needs more years to digest the RS better.
White
2006 Albani Viticoltori Riesling Italy, Lombardia, Oltrepò Pavese
flawed
Golden color, almost coppery. Salty caramel, crazy bitterness on the palate killing your palate. The bottle is off unfortunately.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

White - Off-dry
2004 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Elegant nose with lime, mineral and petrol notes. A hint of white flowers and tangerine. The palate is a little forward but this is a very pleasant and balanced wine with the sweetness in control. Unripe orange and tangerine on the palate with a lemony finish.
White
2006 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Kabinett trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Funny as the nose reminded me, much drier of course, the previous wine which happened to be another Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg but spatlese. This wine was more austere than the rest, in a good way. Some apple, a touch of licorice and herbs. Quite dry, I thought this was Austrian. More lemon and lime with some pear with more air. It was an interesting wine as despite the weight of the wine, this seems very light on the palate, maybe missing a touch on the mid palate. But overall a lovely wine !
White
2010 Pierre Frick Riesling Sans Soufre France, Alsace
Old g olden color. Cooked apple (tarte tatin) on the nose with a hint of caramel. Dry and slight bitterness. Somehow reminds me of chenin blanc except for the texture. As much as I like their regular 2008, I did not like this one at all. This is not how riesling is supposed to taste.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

White - Off-dry
1988 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Well I seriously under estimated this wine when I first tasted it. I initially found the wine showing too much buttery notes and soft. But with more air, and especially on the 2nd day, this was really a pure joy to drink. Smoky with a touch of petrol mixed with wood wax and honey. A little musky note as well (think of an old wet piece of wood). The sugar is beautifully integrated and there's a peaceful balance. Not really a fruit standing out (maybe apple) as this is mainly about tertiary aromatics. Very good wine!
White - Off-dry
2007 Carl Schmitt-Wagner Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Shy nose upon opening. Seems rather dry on the nose, a touch of petrol and slate with lime. Palate is a different story: rich and bigger than you would expect from the nose, shows more exotic fruit (mango) with orchard fruit. A day later, the nose stinks (way too much sulfur). A little simple.
White
2009 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Kabinett #7 Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Rather simple nose/palate. Lime, apple. Too me, this tastes heavy, has a strange borderline lactic texture. Surprised to see this was a Kabinett as this was rather sweet for that level (8% alcohol).
Not my cup of tea at all.
Note that now, at Erste Lage level, the name of the village is not appearing anymore hence the absence of Saarburger on the label (officially in 2014 but Zilliken is already applying the rule).
Also interesting to read that minimum must weights for Erste Lage Kabinett among VDP estates will now be at Spatlese levels which explains the rather sweet sensation for a Kabinett level here. As John Gilman states: Weingut Geltz-Zilliken is the only estate to date in the VDP that I am aware of who embraced the new regulations starting with the 2009 vintage, rather than waiting until it would be officially required with the 2014 vintage.
