Introduction

Our dear friends visited Saturday night. We really enjoyed the three cabs but unfortunately the syrah showed incredibly disjointed.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2005 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Baconbrook USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
94 points
Decanted two hours prior to consumption. Dark ruby color leads to a nose of dark cherry, raspberry and a hint of vanilla. Medium body is both light and mouth coating at the same time with flavors of raspberry, dark cherry, chocolate and a hint of olive. Silky tannins last over 45 seconds. Really good bottle of wine which has dramatically improved over past year.
Red
2010 Morlet Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Morlet Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
96 points
Wow, this is a well made wine! Still a baby but utterly delicious. Deep ruby color leads to a nose of cassis, cigar box, and dark chocolate. Medium full body coats the entire palate with layers of flavor, including red and black fruits, chocolate, and the tiniest hint of wonderful bell pepper. Tannins continue for 60 seconds. This is an early contender for my 2020 wine of the year. Wonderful!
Red
2008 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah In the Rocks USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
Having drank this on several occasions, I can say with full confidence tonight was not a good showing. All the pieces are present, but incredibly disjointed tonight. Will revisit in a year.

Red
2007 Januik Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Always rock solid! Deep ruby color leads to a nose of dark cherry and rich chocolate. Medium full body shows great dark fruit and chocolate. Finish lasts 30 seconds. I really enjoy this wine. Other wines may be more complex but this one's tough to beat for deliciousness.

Closing

While all 3 cabs were delicious. The Match and Morlet are a cut above. The Match is at its peak and should remain at this plateau for another decade. The Morlet is so young yet so good already, but it will be even better in 5 years. As always, there is no better combination than good friends and good wine!
