Flight 1 - Warm Fraser Valley Duck Breast Salad - beluga lentils, kale, confit garlic jus (4 notes)

Red
1982 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
This shows plenty of maturity on the nose, displaying tons of saddle leather and pencil shavings, along with some black cherry, some charred oak spice, and a slight metallic note. There's a touch of cassis sweetness on the palate, along with more leather, black cherry, graphite, charred oak, and rich dark fruits. Soft resolved tannins with a bite of acidity present. Medium length finish ending on notes of cassis and graphite. Showing fine balance and nice maturity, but this faded after an hour in the glass and it's probably best to drink these up sooner rather than later. Very good.

1993 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tons of green bean on the nose, along with smokey oak, black plums, black pepper spice, and plenty of bright red fruits. The green bean carries through to the palate, along with some chalky tobacco, black currants, and red cherry. Plenty of dusty drying tannins with moderate+ acidity. A medium length finish ending on notes of green bean and tobacco. Fully mature but this just isn't going to shake the leafy character of the vintage unfortunately. Lots of green on both the nose and palate. OK.

1998 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Lots of candied red cherry on the nose, along with some black pepper spice, cassis, and earth. More candied red cherry on the palate, as well as some leather, cedar, black cherry, spicy black pepper, oak, and some floral notes. A medium- length finish ending on notes of black cherry and oak spice. This had a rather simple nose and lots of lush candied red cherry on the palate, with no real sense of terroir. Not bad, but not exciting. Good.

1999 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Quite rich and full on the nose displaying aromas of black cherry, blackberry, charred oak, vanilla bean, and spicy black pepper. The richness follows through to the palate, showing ripe black cherry, cedar, smokey oak, black pepper, and candied red cherry. Firm acid, with a medium+ length finish ending on notes of spicy black pepper and black cherry. There's a nice richness to this, and while drinking well now will improve with a few more years in the cellar. Good+

Flight 2 - Peace Country Lamb Shank Tortellini - wild mushroom consommé (2 notes)

Red
1995 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tons of graphite and cedar on the nose, along with aromas of rich red cherry and black currants. There's some cassis sweetness on the palate, along with more graphite, black cherry, cigar leaf, earth, and slate. The tannins are still quite hard, with firm acidity. A long length finish ending on notes of black cherry and graphite. This is a powerful wine, showing big brooding fruits although still a bit austere. This could still use a few more years, but will be worth the wait. Very good+

1996 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
A bit restrained on the nose, but with some coaxing opens up to display lead pencil, earth, rich black fruits, cedar, and some tart red cherry. Some sweet cassis on the palate, along with rich dark fruits, cedar, black pepper spice, red cherry, and saline. Moderate structure, with a medium length finish ending on notes of graphite and red cherry. Quite shy on the nose with some underlying sweetness, but full and rich on the palate. This could use a few years to flesh out and come into balance, but will improve with patience. Very good.

Flight 3 - Braised Pitt Meadows Beef Short Rib - jerusalem artichokes, salsa verde (3 notes)

Red
1986 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Mature dusty nose showing black cherry, saddle leather, candied red cherry, cedar, and some herbal notes. A bot more youthful on the palate, displaying black cherry, clove and black pepper spice, graphite, cedar, raspberry, and a touch of fresh mint. Hard sharp tannins with plenty of acid. A medium length finish ending on notes of graphite and clove. This is in a nice spot right now, showing nice maturity and quite classic in style. No reason to rush to drink these, but no real reason to wait either. Very good.

1989 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Very rustic on the nose showing some ashy aromas, along with pipe tobacco, cigar leaf, red cherry, and some green leaf. Still quite ashy and leafy on the palate as well, plus more red cherry, tobacco, licorice, and tar. A medium- length finish ending on notes of ash and tobacco. This displays an off putting ashy-ness on both the nose and palate, and is quite austere. At peak but lacking any real excitement. I have to say this was quite disappointing, especially considering the vintage at play here. I expected more. Good+

1990 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Great powerful nose displaying plenty of saddle leather and lead pencil, along with bright red cherry, fresh mint, some floral notes, and a hint of cassis sweetness. More to the dark fruit end of the spectrum on the palate, showing rich black cherry, cigar box, lead pencil, leather, cedar, black licorice, black pepper, and some fresh mint. Still some gripping tannins hanging in there that could use some time to soften a touch. A medium length finish ending on notes of lead pencil and black cherry. Still showing lots of power and quite youthful, yet a bit of austerity, this needs some time to be at peak but will reward those who are patient. This was the first vintage of Lagrange to include the Petit Verdot in its final blend, which was planted in 1985. This was clearly the wine of the evening. Fantastic

Flight 4 - Spiced Apple Sauce Cake - cream cheese ice cream, cider sauce (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Massive rich powerful nose showing tons of honey, along with gingerbread, orange peel, green apple, and brown sugar. Plenty of spicy ginger follows through onto the palate, along with red apple, orange zest, and caramel. Medium+ length finish ending on notes of gingerbread and red apple. There's plenty of acid here delivering a nice firm tongue numbing punch on the palate. Great nose, but the fruit is a bit flat and lacking on the palate. That said, this is very enjoyable. Very good.
