Introduction

We had an opportunity to sit in with the Friday night blind tasting group. Wines are listed in the roder they appeared in the flight.

Flight 1 - Warm up whites (2 notes)

White
2012 La Playa Sauvignon Blanc Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
89 points
Pale color ending with bright citrusy notes as well as grass, grapefruit and stone. The palate follows the bouquet. Crisp and bright with a terrific acid spine.
White
2011 Twomey Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, North Coast
88 points
Notes of citrus, stone, banana and florals. On the palate, this shows flavors of citrus, apple and mineral. Not as much acidity as the first wine; there's a creaminess to this wine that is very nice.

Flight 2 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2002 Maison Leroy Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
91 points
Light ruby color. Aromas of cherries, green tea and florals. There's an enjoyable sweetness to the bouquet, almost like a cherry Life Saver candy, then mineral and earth notes. Light-bodied, with cherry and fruit flavors, with a nice mineral streak adding to the finish.

This was double decanted back into the bottle very briefly for sediment (very little) almost exactly an hour before this flight was poured. I wouldn't hold this much longer, drink now.
Red
2010 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
92 points
Ruby color with notes of cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, and florals- lily. Develops clay, mineral and earth overtones. Light to medium-bodied with good acidity and balance. Flavors of red of fruit- cherry and berries, along with clay, mineral and woody qualities. Strong on the attack and finish. 92+ pts.

Red
2007 Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir Growers Collection Calvert Vineyard New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
91 points
Deeper color than the previous two. Aromas of cherries, clay, dark berries with a very subtle earthy undertone. With air the fruit becomes darker and a spice note emerges. Medium-bodied with flavors of dark fruit, cherry and spice. Finishes nicely. 91-92 pts.

I knew this had to be ours; most guesses centered on Sonoma Pinot.
Red
2007 Ehret Family Winery Bella's Blend USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
89 points
Dark color with notes of perfumed black fruit and sous bois. Develops spice and black cherry notes with air. Fair amount of tannin and flavors of black fruit, vanilla, cherry and caramel. I had no clue on this one.

48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Syrah and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Red
2007 SIKA Cabernet Franc Forgotten Barrel USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Crimson color with aromas of perfumed dark fruit, currants, blackberry, vanilla and eventually some chocolate. Firm tannins with flavors of dark fruit and spice, vanilla, red currants, herbs and blackberries.

Flight 3 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
1997 Lapostolle Merlot Cuvée Alexandre Apalta Vineyard Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
Crimson core with some slight bricking. Dominant aromas of beef bouillon cubes, salt and Lipton Onion Soup Mix. The palate follows the nose although there is some red fruit underneath.
Red
2009 Priest Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Deep purplish crimson color with aromas of vanilla, dill, currants and plum. Ripe black fruit notes. Full-bodied with firm tannins and flavors of cherry and dark fruit flavors and hints of vanilla on the finish. Guessed cab blend. 89-90 pts.
Red
2002 Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Franc Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
90 points
Dark color. Vanilla, plum and limestone notes, developing a violet note with air. Full-bodied with firm, chalky tannins and flavors of plum, red fruit, vanilla, dark fruit and violets. 90-91 pts.
Red
1997 Casa Donoso Merlot Chile, Maule Valley
Garnet color with a little bricking. Bordeaux-like nose at first. Red fruit, currant and a bit of funk. Could be a bit of brett here. On the light side of medium-bodied with a healthy bit of acid and flavors of red fruit and green herbal qualities. Turns tart and overly acidic.
Red
2006 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Palengat Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills
92 points
Dark color. Aromas of red fruit and maple syrup followed by vanilla, creme bruless, perfumed florals and dark fruit. Full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins and flavors of red fruit dominating. Finishes with good length. Needs a bit of time yet. Drink 2016+. 92+ pts.

Flight 4 - Bonus blind red (1 note)

Red
2005 Glaetzer Godolphin Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
93 points
Deep inky crimson color. Aromas of raspberry, blueberry, vanilla, violets and dark fruit. Full-bodied with fine tannins and flavors of dark fruit, blackberries, vanilla and blue fruit. Has a nice floral overtone. Balanced, with nice fruit across the palate and a lengthy finish. 93+ pts. I think we all guessed Cabernet on this.
