Introduction

Elaine and John hosted this month's dinner. We had tons of good food - most of us were stuffed to the gills by the time the night was over - paired with a trio of very pleasing young Burgundies.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2008 Patrick Piuze Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

This was very nice, if rather too young. It had a lovely nose, with lemons and green apple aromas tossed with white flowers and underscored by a nice amount chalky mineral. I liked the cut and precision on the palate - there was a very chiseled feel to it, with laser-like acidity racing through citrussy lemony flavours and into a long, minerally finish. Still very primary and just rather too aggressive in its high-toned acidity at this point of time. However, this is a very nice wine that will only get better with time. Try again in 2015.

2010 Maison Roche de Bellene Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Not quite as breathtaking as the last time round, but this was still an excellent wine. It had such a pretty nose, with high-toned, perfumy accents of violets and fragrant spice floating around a core of red cherries, sour plums and sweeter strawberry jam aromas. With time in the decanter, a touch of savoury herb and a tiny hint of oak drifted out amidst the fruit. Really lovely. The palate was rather tighter than the bottle we tried last year, showing a bit more structure and grip. It had the same lovely clarity and to its pure tones of dark cherries and strawberries that I remembered from the last time round, but there was also a super firm spine of fine tannins and orangey acidity undergirding the fruit, carrying the wine in a firm grip all the way into a lovely long finish, with bits of chicory and cinamon spice peeking out at the end. Lovely depth, wonderful clarity, elegant length - still a baby, but this was very enjoyable indeed. This may well be one of those wines that shows well throughout its life. I am looking forward to drinking my bottles over the next 10 years or so.

2008 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Good stuff. This is what I love about Burgundy - this was a world of a difference from the pure, high-toned Vosne 1er Cru Petit Monts that preceded it, yet it was still clearly Burgundy, clearly Côte de Nuits and very nice indeed. While the previous wine was almost feminine in its elegance, this was about as masculine an expression as you could get to, with toasty, smoky, earthy nose, still showing a patina of oak over dark cherry, meat and herb aromas. The palate was firm and muscular, with plenty of depth and scale to its dark fruited notes of ripe plums and blackberries, yet for all that, there was also a nice sense of clean clarity to the whole package, with a finesse that speaks of the terroir. It finished very strongly as well, with a wash of firm tannins, juicy acid and spice amidst its deep black fruit and meat accents. Drinkable with an hour or so in the decanter, but this really needs years and years yet.
